The Plaza Mayor Hotel is very true to its namesake. It is indeed just two steps away from Madrid's iconic square, and otherwise located in a very touristy and commercial district full of other hotels.

For a two star, the hotel is neither inadequate or extraordinary. The hotel lobby has a very regular bar/restaurant that was completely empty on the afternoon of my visit. Other then a very small lounge on the first floor with two couches and a small bookshelf, there are few other amenities, but then again, this hotel is probably best suited for the more no frills traveler who only plans to be in the room to sleep. On my way to it, I stumbled upon the Hammam Al Andalus, which looks like a great place to scrub down and have a massage.

For something in a similar price and star rating but with a lot more character, I would definitely go for the neighboring Hostal Marlasca.

Another hotel in a sleepy part of Madrid. The hotel is cute, posh even. Chaise lounges sitting next to windows with street views, a roomy lounge area to drink and eat, a reception area loaded with information and tips for exploring Madrid. But eerily quiet. And the streets were quiet as well. If you walked up just a block, the atmosphere immediately changed. For that reason, I’d say this was a great pick for older couples or those with smaller children or even those who want to see the more quiet, peaceful side of Madrid away from the hustle and bustle (and noise) of the city center, but still nearby.

The Hotel Plaza Mayor is in a beautiful location surrounded by bars and restaurants, just a quick stroll to the touristic Plaza Mayor. The staff are lovely and speak English as well as Spanish. The rooms are spacious and affordable for such a good location.
The breakfast buffet is gorgeous and caters to Spanish as well as international tastes (where else can you get jamón for breakfast!)
It's perfect for shopping sprees and nights out, since you won't need a taxi to get back again.

When travelling, I’m on a budget and I’m pretty self-sufficient. I don’t need a lot of extras from a hotel (and don’t want to pay for things I’m not going to use). This place has a wonderful price-location-quality ratio. While it’s not big on the extras, what it does do, it does well. Would definitely come back.

There was just a great feel about this place from the moment I walked in. The lobby is an eclectic combo of classic wood and old stone walls. And the woman behind the desk was straight away generous and helpful. But the hotel’s trump card is its location. Unless they build a hotel IN the Plaza Mayor (god forbid), then this is as close as you’re gonna get to the centre of Madrid. Ask for a room that faces the Plaza de la Paja - they’ve got the most light and the best views. I though €8 was about as reasonable as hotel pricing gets for a hot and cold buffet. But once breakfast is broken down the stylish breakfast area (alongside the lobby) closes and goes to waste. It’d be great if they opened it as a bar for guests. Oh, a tip: Don’t eat in Plaza Mayor. It’s a culinary tourist trap. There are better and cheaper places around the corner.
