Though this hotel is only classed as two stars, it feels like much more. Its location is decidedly grand - on a large avenue directly across from Madrid's principal train station (Atocha) and pretty much on the back porch of the not-to-be-missed Reina Sofia Art Museum. The area is lively, surrounded by cafes and probably the city's highest proportion of places to have paella. They are a bit touristy (as a general rule, restaurants with giant pictures of paellas outside aren't usually the best place to enjoy one), but they're perfect for a cold afternoon beer.

The hotel itself feels a bit like the home of an estranged wealthy old aunt. The furniture in the lobby and sprawling lounge on the first floor is dark but regal. Beautiful stained glass parlor windows, old metal chandeliers and long striped drapes definitely bring out a hint of majesty. There is free wifi, though no gym, pool or spa. Other than a breakfast cafeteria there are no other dining options on the premise, but again, plenty just outside the door.

Overall, I'd say this hotel is a little gem and perfect for price conscious travelers who want to have the best of Madrid at their fingertips. Though dated (in a charming way) the hotel is impeccably clean, and perhaps most importantly, it doesn't feel or smell dated. For its location, its decor, and for how impressively well it has been maintained, I'd give it at least 3 stars.

Local from Madrid

This hotel neighbors the Reina Sofia, literally facing the museum where Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” now calls home. But this hotel could be more, given the strategic location. The lobby reeks of antiquity and not in an cool, vintage inspired way either. And the bedspreads in the room? Drab and dusty. At least it’s close to the art museums and the Atocha station, however. What it iacks in presentation it somewhat recoups in location.

The Hotel Mediodía looks a lot more than a 5 star hotel outside and when you arrive in the reception. The decor is classic and the entire hotel was spotless. The rooms are basic, but have everything that you could need, and the exterior rooms have balconies overlooking the Atocha Train Station or the Reina Sofia museum. The windows are all double glazed so despite the busy location, you can't hear a sound from outside.
The breakfast is continental and is pretty cheap, and the lounge areas are spacious and comfortable. The reception staff were fantastic and the gentleman that I was dealing with was absolutely hilarious! They really went out of their way to help with everything.
If you're staying at the hotel, make sure to take a quick stroll up to the beautiful Retiro Park, just around the corner.

Wifi signal was rock solid throughout the hotel - a handy and pleasant surprise given it’s often spotty even in the luxe places. Not really a hotel you’re going to spend a lot of time hanging out in. But there is a lounge - a gorgeous and classically furnished parquet-floor area on the second floor. For a hotel lounge it’s a little on the quiet side (guests seem to wake up, eat breakfast and head out) but if you need somewhere to read or unwind for an hour or two, it’s perfect. Though with no bar on site, you’ll need to bring your own bottle of rioja (I’m sure the friendly staff will rustle you up a pair of glasses if you ask...).

Turning the corner and seeing the glorious white Hotel Mediodia, I thought I’d chosen a five star by mistake. It’s an incredibly beautiful old building and wonderfully maintained. The lobby was large, with a stained glass skylight over head. And the woman at the front desk smiled as I arrived and spoke great English. Once I got up to the room, things took on a more two-star aspect. And I don’t mean that as a negative - it is two-star after all! The room was simple and a little plain, but comfortable and clean. Happily, the bathroom was large and included a tub (ask for one - most rooms, but not all, have one). Breakfast is cheap (€4), but keep in mind you’re only getting continental - a croissant, sweet bun, cereal, fruit, juice and a good strong cup of coffee. It’s pretty much what the average Spaniard starts the day with, but if you’ve got some serious museum hours ahead of you, you might need a mid-morning top up. If you do decide to step out for breakfast, go to El Brillante. It’s a famous Madrid café/bar right next door and their churros con chocolate are divine. No gym in the hotel, but if you want to squeeze in a jog, the enormous (and beautiful) Retiro park is right across the road (having said that, it’s also a marvellous spot for a picnic).
