Walking up to this hotel, it's hard to imagine that it's a four star. The area it's located in - though just moments away from Sol - is rather unremarkable. The hotel's exterior is also rather plain; there isn't a doorman, and the front door is actually quite large and cumbersome so they could use one!

Step inside though, and it's a different story entirely. I was enchanted by the walls covered in wood trimmed beveled mirrors which were a stunning contrast to the crisp white lobby furniture and the glittering chandelier which loomed above. The bar was equally bewitching, and a veritable time machine that made me feel like I'd spiraled back at least 5 decades to a decidedly more opulent era.

The double room I saw was outfitted with a safe, minibar, and large windows that overlooked the rather ordinary street outside. The bathroom - mainly done in coffee colored marble - was a bit dated, but still elegant.

Though the room seemed completely up to snuff, for four star, the hotel's amenities are a bit disappointing. The internet room looked like something from the 90's, and the gym and the business rooms didn't exactly inspire.

The adjoining restaurant/cafeteria seemed rather common, but I must sat that even after I left, images of that stunning bar were still flashing through my mind. Would I stay here? Not likely. Will I be back one evening for a drink? Most certainly!

Wifi is free throughout the hotel and parking is also available for guests.

Anything that sparkles catches my eye and time I stepped foot inside the lobby of Hotel Liabeny, I was sold. The chandelier was just beyond a beautiful, marble trimmed set of stairs and a lounge area with plush leather armchairs. I could hear the idle chatter of friends, family and colleagues as I asked the concierge for various details about the hotel. I was offered a chance to take a peek into one of their rooms and was surely not disappointed. Good size rooms with spotless bathrooms. Never a bad thing, for sure. I also really like this location as it faces one the bright murals on a huge wall. There’s a rainbow. Whenever I pass it, it’s a sign to take in the little things, enjoy the moment.

Hotel Liabeny is in an ideal location for shoppers, just a few minutes’ walk from Puerta del Sol. Despite the noise and the protests that were going on outside at the time, the minute the doors closed behind me there was peace and quiet inside.
The staff were really friendly and I had a great chat with the porter who showed me to the room. He told me a little bit of the history of the hotel as well. When he took me to the restaurant all of the waiters were more than happy to jump in for a photo too!
The room was great and had loads of space for a sharing couple without getting in each other’s way!

All the perks of four-star, but none of the pretension. Two tips: try the sauna, if only for the back-beating hydromassage shower afterwards. And: ask for room 709 or 710 (or similar situated rooms on other floors) - they’ve got charming views out onto the Plaza del Carmen, which was in full Christmas market swing when I was there.

To be honest, I wasn’t immediately convinced. The lobby seemed a funny L-shape and first impressions were the hotel was a little out-dated. But as I delved further, everything changed. Beyond the lobby, the lounge is a stunning dark-wood and glass ensemble - spacious and recalling an earlier (and more glamorous) era. Then I went through to the bar - a dimly lit chamber à la Mad Men, the bartender ready to pour me a single malt. There was just something very classic about it all. And the staff were helpful and polite, but without being over the top. I’ve seen better rooms, but this one was comfortable, the bed was perfect for my tastes and it was clean. A lot of the big hotels have no atmosphere - Liabeny is full of it. Also, in a lot of the biggies you feel like you could be anywhere in the world. Hanging out in this place, I always sensed I was in the middle of Spain, and that’s a huge plus.
