Now known simply as Hotel Cortezo, this hotel isn't too impressive on the outside. In fact, as I entered, I felt a bit like I was entering a parking garage. The two planters were a nice touch, but not quite enough to reassure me that I had arrived at the entrance to a place of lodging.

My feelings changed as soon as I saw a room in the hotel. The junior suite I was shown had a small living room which separated it from the bedroom with a lovely set of white French doors with gleaming gold handles. The bathroom was large and modern with a full bathtub, and I was told that rooms just one category higher have hydro-massage tubs. The view was mediocre - it was of a quiet and rather humdrum internal courtyard - but street view options are available.

Location wise, this hotel is pleasantly located just a street away from all of the hustle and bustle of Sol, though I'd say it's most redeeming feature is the rooftop terrace. The view is grand! You can see about 180 degrees around Madrid, and there are loungers for relaxing in the sun, which is plentiful, as the terrace has southern exposure. The entire terrace is made of wood which makes it feel like a giant deck. Though there are showers and during my visit there were even a few guests lounging in bikinis, like me, I suspect they too were hoping for a pool!

All in all, for 3 stars, the hotel delivers. Wifi is free throughout, and breakfast is included for a small supplement.

Local from Madrid

This hotel has a beautiful lobby and the purple and red that are clearly the theme colors for this hotel blend well together. Great hotel option for those who are true foodies, as the bustling Lavapiés neighborhood, known in Madrid for being a hub of culture is minutes away by walking.

The Hotel Medium Cortezo is a beautiful, modern hotel with a fantastic location. Perfect for nightlife and shopping lovers, you can walk anywhere from the hotel in just a few minutes.
It's just opposite the gorgeous Cine Ideal and surrounded by great bars. The hotel has every service you could possibly need and the staff can even arrange car hire and excursions for you. One of the best parts of it is the off-street parking, since finding a space in Madrid is always a nightmare!

You just can’t get much more central than this. And that’s all the reason you need to book a room at Cortezo. The hotel is clean, modern and comfortable, but it’s the price-to-location ratio where it takes the cake. Puerta del Sol is two minutes by foot, the museums are brief walk away and Lavapiés (a fantastic barrio to explore by day and drink your way through by night) is just down the hill. And you’re five minutes from the Rastro flea market - a Sunday-morning Madrid must (just keep an eye on your wallet). The room was unfussy and, admittedly, pretty basic. But the bed was big and comfy and the bathroom large and clean. What more do you need? Well, if you need extra space, pay another €20 and you’ll get something more akin to a suite. Both the bar and TV area were one floor below ground and so felt a little quiet and out of the way. But with the number of heaving bars within stumbling distance, you don’t want to be drinking at the hotel anyway. Though if you do need a quiet spot to surf the web or read a book with a beer or coffee in hand, the downstairs area is handy. I thought breakfast was generously priced and certainly packs a punch (fruit, pastries, eggs, bacon etc.). Keep in mind there aren’t safes in the rooms, they keep a communal one at reception.

Stayed here on March 2011. Great facilities, near Tirso De Molina Station, few blocks from Puerta Del Sol and Plaza Mayor. You can have breakfast at Hotel or just walk down or up de block...lost of places to eat near by. I ask for a room with street view. My room have a living room area with sofa-bed, small dinning table and flat tv, then a small hall with closet and fridge lead to very nice large bedroom with another flat tv, desk and a large beautiful bathroom. Everything very clean, like new. Love the place and location!!! We move around easily by foot or subway!!! Olé!!!
