It's not often that one stumbles upon a jewel like this. Arguably the best hotel I've ever been to, AC Santo Mauro is the definition of pure, exquisite elegance. Formerly the Embassy of the Philippines, it carries the grace and majesty of something historic, while at the same time, brings forth that allure into practical, modern day luxury. From the cocktail bar's entourage of liquors, to the mirrored dining room and playful library, decadence and class are to be found everywhere. If you’re into fine dining, the library restaurant is a formal affair. The place is certainly fit for a king, or a wedding; which it often has booked up for years in advance. Service wise, I have never experienced such excellence, both in terms of friendliness and attentiveness. Come summer time, the terrace is reputed as the place to be in Madrid.
A stunner. For a five star experience with a boutique feeling, I have yet to see anything that tops this hotel. It's located in a rather posh but sleepy area of town (the Swedish Embassy is next door), but if you're looking more to relax than to engage in some intense tourism, this is the place.
Design lovers will drool. From the electric yellow seats in the otherwise classically decorated lobby, to the abundantly mirrored bar, to the adjoining rooms and lounges which are done up a bit like Alice in Wonderland meets Marie Antoinette on the front cover of Condé Nast Traveler, the first floor of the hotel is a total smorgasbord for the eyes.
The terrace, nestled in a nice verdant and quiet garden, is also a nice place to relax, though beware falling chestnuts! I took one straight to the head. The hotel's restaurant is probably among the most beautiful I've seen. It's located in a former library, and the elaborate drapes and wall coverings in contrasting blue and gold are absolutely radiant.
The suite I visited wasn't nearly as elaborately decorated as the hotel's common areas. It was done in shades of gray and silver and much more modern in taste. It had three huge windows overlooking a quiet courtyard that faced the Swedish Embassy, and at around 1pm, the sun was creeping through ever so gently, and had enveloped the entire bed in a warm glow.
Though there's plenty more to gush about this hotel, its most stunning feature is its pool. It's accessed through a winding almost secret path, but heavens, is it worth the journey! It's an underground infinity with columns that give it a bit of a Turkish bath flair, though if you want a full-on Orient experience, there is also a sauna and a Hammam. Cushy loungers line the pool, which was absolutely empty when I visited. Indulgent Madrid staycation, here I come!
Also, the gentleman who showed me around the hotel was very kind, and I must add that the entire space was especially fragrant! Most guests comment how much they like the scent, I was told.
AC Santo Mauro would be the perfect spot for a dream wedding. I fell in love with it as soon as I walked through the door. It’s so quiet and tranquil and feels like you’re stepping back in time. The lounges all have a separate theme and they are so luxurious and plush that you could just sit and relax forever! I absolutely loved the red room and the little bar.
The terrace is beautiful and spacious enough to go for a little stroll in the sun. Sit and listen to the water fountain and forget about everything that you’ve left outside the walls!
The staff were so lovely and friendly as well that they made me feel right at home.
OK - so I haven't actually stayed here. But I've seen the rooms, passed through the lobby a million times, and sipped on cocktails on the ridiculously sweet terraza. While it isn't located in tourist-central (a bonus IMHO), this area is very much the center of real Spanish life. So if you're looking for an amazing hotel, minus all the crazy tourists, this is the perfect place. If nothing else, stop by for a drink. During the summer, the terrace is the place to be.
