Talk about a cool, underground (literally) + international experience.

Peking Tavern is the brainchild of two architects (Andrew + Andrew) who wanted to bring traditional Asian food to Downtown. If you want to know why it's great:

- They hand make their own dumplings and noodles.
- They've got great lunch specials + happy hour.
- Great beer program (draft + packaged bottles) consisting of Asian favorites and local craft.
- They have Baijiu and they've even come up with their own signature cocktails using this rather dangerous liquid. If you don't know what this is, look it up.
- Last but not least, they've got this totally random and awesome almost life sized poster of Kobe Bryant on the wall.

Nuff said.

Heading down to the area and circling for parking was really fun.
Walking downstairs was even better because you know there is going to be something really good behind that red door. Meeting a few others here as early as I am, we took up the first long table we saw. Marilyn was our server this evening as we ordered the Taiwanese beer. We were waiting on one last addition to the table, Cat W. arrives just in time.
We first get this fresh salad to get our appetites going. Cucumbers and wood ear mushrooms have this great dressing on them. I couldn't tell if the kale was boiled or steamed but those were really tasty too. I remember the waitress sets down a plate of Kobe beef dumplings. Cat suggested to puncture a hole to allow it to breath. What do I do?? I dip it into my soy sauce and since I already see somewhat of a hole, I shove the entire dumpling in my mouth. Sooooo goooooood and so fucking hooooooot!!! I think I burnt my tongue a little bit as I try to dispurse the steam from my mouth. I'm sure you can see the steam come out of my mouth as if it was in the middle of Winter. We also got bite size sesame balls which were excellent. We get a couple of shots poured for us to taste. They called it bai-joe, it's the Mandarin way of saying putting down the alcohol or setting up a dinner party.
The first one was really strong in flavor and in alcohol strength. I am not sure if it was already cleansing our palates that the next one was easier then after another. It was like a trip into the history of where these bottles came from. After we have our insides cleaned by these wonderful strength of alcohol, we had a few more dumplings.

18 Craft beers, countless dishes of dumplings, soups, fried chicken, greens and more. Hoppy Hour 5-7p.

Extremely disappointing. Well that is my take on this place... I came here with a large group of friends on a Monday funday trek around DTLA. Well disappointed is how I left after having my ethereal dreams crushed to pieces...

Seriously this is stunning. They have a large chalkboard of various draughts on tap. It wasnt until my 5th choice beer before they had one available that was on the chalkboard or their menu. Seriously cross something out its in chalk or on your printed what beer we have menu. Needless to say I was kinda irked about that to begin with.

So my group was still hungry and wanted some grub to go with our grog. So we had the bright idea that dumplings would be delicious as it is a Chinese joint. So off to the dumpling order we went... FAIL... the dumplings were not even nearly half as good as Ling Ling dumplings in a bag from Costco's frozen aisle... wanh wahhhhhhhh... heres your booby prize... or so we felt...

Needless to say we didn't stay that long and the pricing wasn't horrible. The service wasn't the greatest nor the worst. They also do have a ping pong table available for those that are interested... Do I detect the idea of beer pong??? hmmmmmm...

none the less not only is this joint subterranean... it is substandard and not worth it to me. Also the bathroom was equivalent to your standard Arco or Chevron restroom... definitely not the greatest but will make due in a pinch...

If you are a foodie and cocktail lover...this is the spot for you. Ask to meet the owners Andrew and Andrew and you will be glad you did. We found out that they are high end architects with a love for life and it shows through their restaurant. I love the beef stew noodle soupm, bette r than any restaurant in San Gabriel!

The Andrews own this place and they're fantastic. They make handcut noodles and handmade Chinese food. Also, the drinks are often Baiju based but there is also a gastropub's selection of designer beers there.

Lucky me! I got to try an off the menu item - green scallion pancake with spam and eggs! Delicious! Love this place.

Probably some of the best Chinese food I've had in LA, west of Monterey park/Alhambra area. The beefstew noodle and jia jian mien are both made with handmade noodles and were excellent. The broth was perfect and the sauces were not too over bearing - done just right. The fish dumplings are also homemade, and dipped in a tasty spicy sauce. You also must try the lotus root salad - crispy and refreshing and the steamed fish. They specialize in bai Jou cocktails. You must try the way of the dragon or chrysanthemum martini! The service is excellent and the venue has the perfect feel of old and new china meshed into a modern gastropub feel!

Loved the dumplings. The restaurant is located downstairs and has a great ambience. I loved that everything is hand made and so flavorful. Lots of veggie options for my fellow vegetarians.

Peking Tavern has some of the best Chinese food in DTLA. Billed as a gastropub, it has a fantastic beer menu to back up that claim.

My first Gogobot event.
Being pro has its perks.

Great food, great company & great drinks.

It was a nice event. Got to meet the owners and got their point of views in opening Peking Tavern. Great to know the back story.

We got treated to a tasting menu, Delicious.
*Lamb Dumplings (New Item) were the bomb
*Smashed Cucumbers were refreshing
*Mala Potato Slaw was a first for me. Potato as a slaw. It works. Yum
*Shrimp & Squash Dumplings (New Item) Oh man, this was delicious.
*Sichuan Fish Dumplings - One of their signature dish and now I know why, So good.
*Spicy Beef Noodle Soup - One of the best beef noodle soup I've ever had. Get this for sure.

We also got a sample of one of their Byejoe cocktail. "Way of the Dragon" Whoa, that was nice. Smooth.

We were here to celebrate the Moon Cake Festival and we each got to try some moon cake courtesy of Audrey Lo (Community Manager) Yes,

It was nice to meet a bunch of my fellow Gogobot(ers).

Love their dumplings! The special dish the owner made (shrimp and squash) was one of the best! Lamb dumplings were savory and not gamey at all.

Cocktail:
peachy keen (Evan Williams bourbon, peach nectar, ginger, lemon juice)
Way of the Dragon (delicious, sweet and strong! Dragon fire bye Joe, try organic vanilla vodka, lemon juice and pineapple juice)

peking tavern, an underground wilderness inside the heart of downtown. love the atmosphere and the dumplings taste amazing with all good food places. they make dumplings taste so different from other dumpling places. Defitnetly good to try. feel free to try drinking because they have happy hour. they have chinese liquer like byejoe which sounds like soju. mixing it and calling it the way of the dragon which tastes like lychee, 70proof making it super strong and smooth. get it with some dumplings and you have yourself a feast.
