Want an extreme sport to test your endurance, due to the high altitude and steep ascent in full sun? Try volcano surfing. Scale Volcán Cerro Negro. Again, water will be critical on this one-hour uphill trek – to fend off the overwhelming heat and to assuage any chances for, what my husband calls in his Chilean Spanish, la puna (height sickness). At the summit, relish the fantastic view of its neighbors, the other smoking cones, all part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Then grab your ash-board and hang on for the endorphin-packed plunge to the bottom of this cinder volcano.

Take a 45 minute hike up Cerro Negro carrying a board to the top. Be prepared for wind as well as a spectacular view.
Ignore the 'oh sh*t' feeling as you gaze down what seems an incredibly steep decline. Sit on the board like a sled and enjoy the ride down as your entire body eats volcano dust.
For adrenaline junkies, the ride will be a huge let down.
It really is like sledding when you were a kid (unless you want to lose control and go as fast as possible to wipe out... Not recommended as volcano gravel isn't soft like snow).
The experience is unique but the highlight is the hike!

Just slightly insane, this has to be one of the most electrifying experiences. Suiting up in an orange jumpsuit, after a long steep hike up Cerro Negro, an active volcano just outside of Leon city, I peer down over the edge. The slope is pretty steep and some of the group opt out at this stage. Sitting on a tiny wooden board with two ropes either side for steering, we’re off. I quickly realise how unforgiving the black volcanic dust is, as tiny pebbles and rocks hit my face and scrape my knees. I hit upto 50 miles per hour going down, a thrill and something of a blur. Adrenaline junkies won’t get enough of this hot new Nicaraguan sport.

Waaaaay fun and totally worth it. And yes, freakishly scary too. Particularly when you are standing at the top of the mountain looking over the edge wondering why you agreed to do this. But rest assured, once you are in motion, you will discover you have some control over the simple formica-bottom board. Put on the brakes whenever you choose: just use your feet and dig in! Whether you fly down the mountain at record pace, or cruise like a granny -- and me! , this is an unusual and exhilarating experience you won't find many places in the world. Well worth the time, if you've got a bit of adventure in you. And something of a badge of honor amount the Leon backpacking crowd. Of course many an injury has been had on the mountain too, esp. among those who aim to break the speed record. So don't be fooled into the race by the beer-driven hype served up on the drive over. There's many other reasons to go: great views on the hike up, killer photo ops up top, and a once-in-a-lifetime ride down.

Volcano boarding on Cerro Negro is a must do on a trip through Nicaragua. It's not often that you can say you sledded down the side of a volcano on lava. This tour is really fun and can be done through almost any hostel or tour operator. They give you a board with a fresh piece of formica on the bottom, a coverall suit, and very basic instructions - don't fall off.
We were supposed to be able to go twice but only had time for one run. Way fun, little scary, definitely worth the story.
