Oceanside

The cosy upstairs dining room at Watermarc Grill in Laguna Beach has a rustic chic feel with raw brick walls, contrasting wood beams and warm pendant lighting. Our server was attentive and knowledgable. The Chilean Sea Bass with Heirloom Carrots, Clover Honey and Chimichurri was expertly prepared and most enjoyable in the sumptuous candle lit ambiance that is Watermarc.

2015 OC Restaurant Week: Dinner Menu $40

Salmon Tartare: 4 stars
Salmon & dill was very fresh in this dish & presentation was very nice for thus dish but it needed more sauce/dressing on the salmon because eating this with the side of peppercorn lavosh made it on the dry side.

Petrale Sole Meuniere: 1 star
This was such an overly salty dish that I add to ask for a lemon to squeeze the juice on top to cut the saltiness of the fish.

There were no lump crab but instead only mashed potatoes as sides on this dish. I was looking forward to enjoying this dish but yet this was the most disappointing dish of the night. =(

Cornish hen: 4 stars
Very tasty & tender meat that this hen had &

Ginger pear crisp: 4 stars
The pears were nicely baked & covered with maple pecan crumble & drizzled with honey. This came with a side of ice cream which nicely complimented this dessert. Yummy

Olive oil pine nut: 1 star
The fig chutney completely overwhelmed this cake & its sides were burnt. This was also a disappointment of the night.

White Chocolate Macadamia Bread Pudding: 4 stars
This was a complimentary birthday celebration cake but is also on the regular menu, this cake was so moist, soft & delicious that it just melted in my mouth. The pineapple ice cream perfectly complimented this cake.

Service: A+
Attentive & they even brought out a very delicious complimentary bday celebration cake without me having to ask for it because I had put this on the RSVP on my open table booking.

Overall: 4 stars
This was a great experience overall but the Petrale Sole Meuniere was a huge let down because it was extremely salty. The Olive Oil Pine Nut Cake was burnt and was drowning in fig chutney.

It's Orange County Restaurant week. I sampled the Wild Horse red wine, steak skirt, salmon tartare, and the olive oil pine nut cake. The steak and foie gras and tartare were delicious. The dessert was underwhelming.

The view of Laguna Beach is lovely from the downstairs bar, which has Happy Hour from 4pm-6pm and is $2 of wines and beers and select appetizers and burgers.

A group of us do an alphabet dinner group and we were on W and our timing happened to coincide with OC restaurant week, so we picked a W from the list to enjoy the prix fixe pricing.

There was 10 in our group. We made reservations ahead of time since we had such a large group. The restaurant is quite small, and there isn't a ton of seating so keep that in mind if you happen to drop in. You could be waiting awhile if it's during prime meal times.

I know that parking at Laguna Beach can be horrible, but since we were going for dinner on a weeknight, a bunch in the group parked in a structure that was free after 6 (or 7? i can't remember) I was lucky enough to find street parking just a block up from the restaurant.

We were seated near the bar on a long table. Our server was also the bartender. I got to hand it to the guy, he still tried to be attentive to us. Service was great.

Most of our group opted for the prix fixe, but several of us ordered off the main menu.

Fresh bread with Olive butter was delivered to our table. The bread was spectacular. Hot from the oven too. SO GOOD.

I opted for the filet mignon pot pie and prime skirt steak salad. The pot pie was small - perfect appetizer size. Everything was great in it, but I felt that it was too salty for me. The salad was so not a salad. It was skirt steak with a small side salad. I was thinking it was more of a full size salad with meat on top. Unfortunately, the steak wasn't really seasoned. It's possible that it wasn't because of the salad having bacon and blue cheese on it which is salty enough.

I got the seasonal fruit crumble for dessert. Wish I got the bread pudding instead. I don't know what ice cream they put with the fruit crumble but it was not pleasant. A bunch of people at the table tried it out and none of us could figure out what flavor it was. It was horrible. #FAIL.

Overall, I gave it 4 stars because the service was excellent and the food wasn't too bad. Prices were a bit on the higher side, but considering the location and the type of restaurant, it's probably about par. Definitely need to go back and try some other items on the menu.

It's been a hot minute since we've had an alphabet dinner and we were on 'W'. We settled on Watermarc in Laguna Beach during restaurant week and boy, were we excited. With a party of 10, we were at the largest table inside the restaurant. The bread and butter they brought out at the beginning was amazing! It was HOT from the oven and presliced for us. The butter was olive-infused and it was delicious. I could have just had bread and butter all evening and been a happy camper. Just perusing the menu, I spotted a filet mignon pot pie. First of all, I love pastry with savory so this was right up my alley. I was disappointed that it wasn't offered on the restaurant week menu so while half of our party ordered the prix fixe, Chris K. and I ordered a bunch of appetizers to share and a salad. It came out to about the same as the prefixe anyway and I think we had more interesting dishes. We ordered:

Burrata mozzarella ($11): This was served with crostini, herb pesto and heirloom tomatoes. Easily my favorite appetizer we ordered. The burrata was creamy, served chilled, and on top of the crostini, it was delicious.

Sizzling garlic shrimp ($14): This sounded good and I guess I missed the part where it was served on top of the sweet onions, fennel, and citrus. There wasn't a lot of garlic that I could find in the dish and not too many shrimp for that matter. It was a lot of onion and fennel though. You would think that a dish that has garlic and shrimp in its name would have more of a ratio of garlic and shrimp in it versus the filler. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and came out sizzling in a cast iron cassoulet. The waitress placed this on the table so fast that she almost dumped it on me. Luckily she did not.

Herb crusted Lamb chops ($15): This sounded amazing but execution was meh. I thought that the lamb was a little gamey to the taste and that's not something I want when I have lamb. The meat was served medium rare but the herbs did not impart any flavor.

Filet mignon pot pie ($7): I loved this. How can you go wrong with puffed pastry over beef stew with chunks of filet mignon in it? You really can't. I thought it was great but Grace thought hers had too much salt in it.

Farm salad with chicken (full size) ($12 + $3 for chicken): I really wanted vegetables with my meal after all of the meat we had been eating recently so we compromised and ordered a salad. This was made with a sherry vinaigrette and served with feta. It was lovely. The chicken was lacking though and for the extra money, they could have added a full breast of chicken instead of half of one.

4-grain old fashioned ($10): Chris ordered this and it had quite a kick. It was strong to the taste but smooth.

Strawberry basil hard lemonade ($11): I love all things strawberry and basil. This reminded me of the drink from Mick's Karma Bar except with vodka. Yum!

White chocolate macadamia nut bread pudding ($9) The waiter wasn't sure that there were enough chocolate bundt cakes left since they were only for the prix fixe so we ordered their most popular dessert. It comes with a pineapple ice cream which was super creamy and went well with the bread pudding. I liked it a lot and can see why it might be so popular. This was by far the best decision since we tried the strawberry shortcakes that Julie and Mike ordered and that wasn't so much a hit. I did enjoy the rosemary scone/ shortcakes that came out with that but it wasn't fantastic. The lemon pot de creme that came out looked great and from what I could tell since I didn't try it, my dining companions liked it.

I was also able to try some of Grace's hanger steak salad ($18), which was a bit of a disappointment since the meat was not seasoned at all. It tasted funny to me without the proper seasoning. Her dessert was also a fail. She had the pear and ginger seasonal fruit cobbler with homemade ice cream and it was awful. She didn't even eat half of it before having us try it. We all thought it tasted weird.

There were definitely some hits and misses to the evening but our service was stellar. Anthony was helping out since ours wasn't his regular table to serve but he was fantastic. Our appetizers came out in a flurry and it didn't seem like they missed a beat. He was able to split our checks accordingly and it made it easier to pay at the end. Bravo! I definitely recommend this place for light bites and drinks or even a nice sit down dinner. It is small so you may want to make a reservation beforehand.

Also I noted that the items featured on their restaurant week menu is not on their regular menu at all so you can't order the filet mignon mac & cheese, tea smoked duck, or the chocolate dessert a la carte. This is not unusual for restaurants to do but it would have been nice to have the option nonetheless. It does give regular customers something new to try and I applaud them for being creative with their prix fixe menu.

Small but comfortable and always busy, Watermarc never disappoints. Grazing plates for sharing are all wonderful, don't miss the watermelon/ahi skewers. Follow this with the 3-way filet, 3-color cauliflower and 3-way mash and you can't go wrong!
