Description
Kinkakuji is the common nickname of Rokuonji (Deer Garden Temple), a beautiful Zen temple in Kyoto, Japan. Kinkakuji was built in 1393 as a retirement villa for Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga (1358-1409). ... Read more
He intended to cover the exterior with gold, but only managed to coat the ceiling of the third floor with gold leaf before his death. The shogun lived here in luxury as Kyoto's people suffered the effects of severe famine, earthquakes and plague - as many as 1,000 people died each day during this period. After his death, his son converted the building into a Zen temple of the Rinzai school named Rokuonji, in accordance with Ashikaga's wishes. This was an established tradition and many of Kyoto's temples are former retirement villas.

Visiting this temple is like stepping into a movie. The view surrounding this temple is nothing short of magical and the temple itself is beautiful! You can't go inside anymore, but even seeing the temple from the shore is worth the visit.

Gorgeous gold wrapped temple in the Kyoto hills. The entrance fee is rather high but well worth the visit!

One of the most awesome shrine in Kyoto. If you want to take photo of it, make sure you come in the right time. I came in around noon, almost sunset and the sunlight is shining straight to the temple. Its so hard to take perfect photo cost the shrine reflecting the sunlight (since it is covered in gold foil) and create backlight cast.

I saw Kinkakuji (which is also known as the "Temple of the Golden Pavilion") in the rain and it was still incredible.

This amazing garden definitely harkens back to the days of old where art, spirituality, and tea were widely embraced. While it may be busy with tourists, it is more than worth it to take a look.

One of the most iconic structures in Kyoto, this Golden Pavilion was partially destructed and rebuilt again 60 years ago!
Fabulous beautiful piece, when the sun heats the gold leaf and reflects in the water is definitely unique!!

Although swarmed with tourists, you can understand why this UNESCO World Heritage Site is such a popular stop for everyone once you see it for yourself. It's stunning golden leaf decorative exterior leaves you speechless, and with it's picture perfect natural backdrop and beautiful lake surrounding the temple itself, it's as if you have stepped into a picture. Walk around the back of the temple to see the majestic beauty of its surrounding garden area. On a sunny day, there is no better way to spend the afternoon in Kyoto then to visit the Golden Pavilion to witness its beautiful charm and take some awesome photos!

Absolutely stunning. This temple is both serene and showy at the same time, and the extensive history makes this place truly special. You've likely seen a photo of this before, but it's even better in real life!

The most popular temple in Kyoto, the landmark. The temple covers a massive area, however the temple's icon is The Golden Pavilion which gives a striking scenery in every season. The most popular spot for photograph, which is loved by amateur and professional. From my opinion, the best time for visiting this temple is in autumn and winter, when both the foliage color of the trees and the snowflakes strengthen the beauty of the Golden Pavilion. No wonder it becomes a must see temple in Kyoto.

This is probably one of my favorite tourist attraction in all of Asia. The Golden Pavilion encompasses the perfect amount of Japanese culture and nature. Looking back, I wish I had spent more time here and in Kyoto.
