Underneath the flagpole area you find Plaza Putra, an underground shopping area with restaurants and parking for cars. The Plaza suffered major damage from floods in 2003, and you will discover some areas that have not yet recovered.

A nice field / square where tourists can hang around on the field and take pictures of the surrounding. However there're some occasion where the field is closed for some event, especially during the independence day period.

Facing the Sultan Abdul Samad building, this historical landmark is important to all Malaysians for being the place where the first Malayan flag was raised in 1957, thus declaring our independence from British rule.

The building you see in the picture lights up at night and changes about 15 different colors. It is a replica of Big Ben from England. Malaysia was once a British colony.

The Merdeka Square is just a big patch of green grass when there is no carnivals and events. However, the symbolic 95 meters tall flagpole is worth the visit as it is one of the tallest in the world.

If you are lucky during your visit, you may encounter major cultural events or marathons held here. The boring green patch of grass are instantly turned into a vibrant and exciting carnival.

Of course, this place is a must visit on August 31 every year as the country celebrates it's Independence Day with colorful parades and cultural performances.
