Sweden and Russia. In the next century, the British nearly destroyed the city during the Crimean War. But today, the city of 50,000 is so tranquil that it has brushes with boring. The nearby Langinkoski Nature Reserve, a 60 acre wilderness on the island, is plied with small, rapid rivers, and is a nice place to walk by the waterfront or through the woods. Entrance is free, but the fishing lodge on site requires payment for entrance. The Maritime Center Vellamo is a stunning building on the port, and features exhibits about shipwrecks, naval history, and Finland's long history of shipbuilding.
