This former mandarin oriental property is serene tropical luxury at its very best. The Thai architecture and artifacts make this a lovely cultural getaway as well as resort. The staff are kind and impeccably trained lead by a stellar team in Stephane (GM) and Asmara (Asst GM). Excellent (and reasonably priced for 5 star resort) Food & Bev options and pools, pools, pools! Plus a private jetty for snorkeling and day trips and a spa fit for Thai (or global) Royalty. At just 79 guest rooms (mostly standalone villas on the hillside or beach) you are assured to be treated by staff and other guests alike as a visiting friend at an amazing private home. Top 5% of all resorts I've ever visited. My wife reckons its the most beautiful rural resort she's enjoyed thus far.

If you want ultimate relaxation, onsite amenities and superbly sophisticated yet non-stuffy service this is the choice on Koh Samui and among the best worldwide.

A top spot for a fly-and-flop break. Brilliant sea-views greet you each morning from your balcony, or from the al fresco breakfast terrace. Stunning infinity pool overlooking the forested mountains, or take the canopy walkway (the "wobbly bridge") down to the beach-side pool. Plenty of space for everyone. The cliffside villas are interspesed with another five pools - just pick your preferred colour from red, yellow, green or lilac - and beautifully maintained lush, tropical gardens and pathways. Rooms are more than roomy, bathrooms are suitably super-sized, as you'd expect from any 5* resort in Asia these days and the service is legendary Thai hospitality. Downers? No Happy Hour to encourage a few more guests to the magnificent Air Bar; lack of dining options for a resort of this pedigree (although there are a couple of good local alternatives nearby) - some sort of signature a la carte restaurant seems to me a glaring ommission; breakfast coffee a bit on the weak side; beach not really swimmable - at least not when I was there in July; lack of "What's On" and "What to Do" information. However, some of these negatives may well be turned around sooner rather than later, as the hotel has only been open a few months. If you want lots of action, go to Chaweng or Lamai; if you want peace and quiet, plenty of space and splendid vistas, lots of comfort and 5* luxury, try the new Interconti Koh Samui.

Not an easy name to remember - Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort - but well worth the 50 minute transfer to get to this hidden gem on the South West coast of Koh Samui. Having just been re-opened in Feb 12, this 79 room boutique luxury hotel sits on a cliff overlooking the stunning 5 islands in unbelievably blue sea.

The pedigree of the resort is unquestionable and the level of quality furnishings and overall colonial design is great. A few small service issues still pop up now and again but that is to be expected from such a new resort and crew.

Guests should look forward to some innovative cuisine coming from the new French Michellin-star trained exec chef, Luke McDonell, who is planning a complete overhaul of each menu. Judging by the superb quality of the breakfasts the new menus will no doubt be winners.

This resort is isolated, so not for those who like shopping, clubs or motorized sports - that's the domain of Chaweng - but there are 2-3 restaurants locally to offer some other choices.

Biggest plus is its gorgeous views and beautiful location, biggest negative is the beach is too rocky to swim in. But it does have 7 swimming pools!
