I have not personally been to Fort Zachary Taylor State Historic Site and Park, but many of Seabird Key's guests have gone and have always given the experience rave reviews. I tend to trust our guests as they typically are experienced travelers.

Fort Myers Beach

Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1973, this popular 87-acre state park is anchored by a famous Civil War fort which plays host to several special events throughout the year. The beach here is shaded by several acres of Australian pine trees so it's always a bit cooler than the rest of Key West. Good deep water swimming, restrooms, and a concession stand.

While Key West is not known for its beaches, the one at this state park is an exception. Not as crowded as those on South Roosevelt, it is tranquil, convenient to a tour of the Fort, an has a nice concession stand.

The Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, better known simply as Fort Taylor (or Fort Zach to locals) is a Florida State Park and National Historic Landmark centered on a Civil War-era fort located near the southern tip of Key West, Florida.

10 minutes walk to the entrance and then you may enjoy the beach, snorkel at the artificial rock reefs, yoga at 8 am, explore the Fort, and cool off with the showers.

“Fort Zach,” as the locals call it, has the nicest beach in Key West with the clearest, cleanest, deepest (and therefor coolest) water for swimming. There are nature trails though a bit of sub-tropical forest, and wildlife-viewing in the historic fort’s moat, which has one of the few freshwater lenses in the area, attracting birds, turtles, and very occasionally, larger reptiles like American Alligators. Birding is excellent at Fort Zach, and the rare Loggerhead kingbird once put in an appearance here.
The Fort itself was built in 1866 to defend the coastline. Fort Zach played major roles in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. For its time, it was an engineering marvel, with sanitary facilities flushed by the tide and desalinations plant that produced drinking water.

We were only in Key West for a couple of days and I was so happy that we found out about this place. The park is very nice and well kept, the view from the top of the for is beautiful and the water is of an amazing transparent blue that I could not explain in words!

The best beach in Key West. Facilities include bathrooms, showers, concession area, chairs and umbrellas to rent and a fort to explore. The water is beautiful and some nice snorkeling. This park also has shade trees, picnic tables and grills. It can be a little rocky in spots so bring water or beach shoes.

Fort Zachary is a locals favorite beach, with miles of white sand, clear waters, panoramic sunset views, and designated picnic areas under shaded tress. This is perfect for your picnic or cookout beachside day!

Located 4 1/2 miles away from our condo at the Southernmost tip of the island. Ft. Zach offers Key West history as displayed at the fort as well as the BEST beach in Key West. There is plenty of shade under the trees, picnic tables, grills, concession stand, bathrooms and outside shower to clean up at the end of the day. You would be amiss if you didn't take my bikes for a ride into Key West and explore your way to Ft. Zachory Park. It's a must see and the bike ride there is too.

Beautiful, but the beach was a little rocky. Also the waves were sorta big and fast, not really good for small children. There was a lot of amenities available though like picnic tables, bbq grills, restrooms and a restaurant.

Our favorite beach due to the many shady areas, good showers and bathrooms, snack bar, and snorkeling. But watch out for the rocky beach -- water shoes are recommended. You can also visit the old civil war era fort.

Our favorite bike ride to the beach. Watch the ships come and go, visit the fort and enjoy the views.
