Description
Captain Tony’s Saloon is the location that used to house Sloppy Joe’s Bar, where Ernest Hemingway spent most of his time as an author when he lived in Key West. During that period, he wrote “To Have ... Read more
and Have Not” and “The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber.” Later, Jimmy Buffet performed here in his early career. Today, you can come to admire the history and atmosphere while you stay to have a taste of the bar’s specially made brew and its key lime pie. You can also hear a variety of live local bands as well.

Put your heels against the curb, tilt your head back, see if you can get a quarter into the mouth of the Grouper!

Old divey bar right off Duval, where Jimmy Buffett got his start. Cheap drinks and live music make this spot a fun bar to hit up.

Title of the Oldest Bar! This is a stroll from Hemingway's house. A trip the famous writer used to take very frequently.

The original Home of Sloppy Joes. You can still find the favorite chair of Ernest Hemingway at the head of the bar. Sloppy Joes move out and across the street after the Land Lord raised the rent by 50 cents a month. Captain Tony took over. Grab a Tee Shirt here for sure. This guy was bigger than life!

Captain Tony is a Key West legend, and his bar feels like you are stepping back in time to the old island days. Also the oldest bar on the island!

Nearly every visitor to Key West catches wind of the fact that the Sloppy Joe's Bar once had a famous - and highly loyal - client named Ernest Hemingway. What many don't catch on to is that the author's favorite watering hole was actually a much lower-key dive bar down an adjacent side street, now called Captain Tony's. Even fewer realize that Captain Tony himself was almost as interesting and twice as colorful as Mr Hemingway. With memorable details like the full-size tree growing through the roof, walls decorated with undergarments and business cards of people who don't remember being there, barstools engraved with the names of politicians, Hollywood movie stars, authors and rock stars who have sat there before you make this a serious contender for the best place to sip a cocktail in the Keys. Oh, and for good luck, stand outside with your back to the bar and flip a quarter backwards. If it lands in the grouper's mouth - you're destined for a life of fame and wealth. Or at least another rum and coke...

If you want to get away from the cliché, raucous crowds and soak up some local history while sipping on the bar’s own brew, you have found your spot. You could spend hours reading the walls for all the cards, dollars and bras hanging from every surface. Toss a quarter in the grouper, sit under the tree, play some pool or just kickback. This place was just the refuge from the everyday mundane.

One of the best dive bars anywhere in the world! In the spot of the original Sloppy Joe's bar, which was Hemingway's old hang out, the saloon is owned and operated by one of Key West's colorful town mascots - Captain Tony. If you've ever heard the Jimmy Buffett song "Last Mango in Paris", it's about the life of Captain Tony. The place is full of character and a dangerous pit stop for anyone trying to stay sober!
