Kentucky Holidays

One does declare, nothing is quite like a warm Kentucky spring, mint julep in hand and the Derby on display. It’s the perfect afternoon for those who prefer to consume local, as both the bourbon and the horses are born and bred in this Southern state. Fertile soil and expansive pastures make Kentucky ideal for agriculture and raising livestock, ... Read more
most notably the renowned thoroughbred racing horses often found competing in the Kentucky Derby. The bluegrass common in the fields earned Kentucky the nickname, the “Bluegrass State,” though it’s not rare to also see festivals honoring the music of the same name here too. But the state has an additional nickname — ”Barbecue Capital of the World” — and Kentucky offers no shortage of similar American traditions. It was here that Abraham Lincoln was born, and it’s the only place in the world with a plant manufacturing Chevy Corvettes (and a National Corvette Museum to boot.) With so many restaurants and attractions to explore, Kentucky has visitors running laps like thoroughbreds themselves.

Kentucky, the home of my paternal Grandmother's ancestors, is hard to define. It's so much more than grazing horses, bluegrass festivals, Appalachian small towns, cavernous caves, bourbon distilleries, and tobacco barns. Kentucky is all this and much, much, more!

this is a great state for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers lower rates nationally on hotels and restaurants. There is a vast amount of opportunities for hikers, kayaking in rivers and lakes, off road trails and parks.I recommend the Wilderness Outdoor Recreation Park and Black Mountain Offroad Adventure Area. The lodge is great in Bell County near the Wilderness Park, and for Black Mountain contact Stephen Foster at the Harlan County Campground at Putney Trailhead. He offers new cabins, low rates and even kayaking.

I guess I'm biased being from Kentucky, but this great state has a lot more to offer than the rest of America thinks! We have just about everything: horse races, bourbon, and probably one of the best states for college basketball in the nation! While we may not have tons of blockbuster attractions, we can awe almost anyone with the natural beauty and southern charm our state holds! And as the push for a new state slogan says, Kentucky kicks ass!!

My review of Kentucy, is simply on the scenery. What can I say? It was absolutely gorgeous. The Blue Ridge Mountains were something to see. I drove through practically the whole state going west and I used the highways only.

Crucial Fun Fest was the most fun thing that happened in 2010! Gumbo Yaya rules, as hot as it may be in Lexington in May. Here's a tip: to cool down run through the fountains in the center of town. So much fun!
