from the Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre. The relic of the tooth is kept in a modest two-story inner shrine that is closed to all but the most venerated monks. In contrast to the plain white exteriors, the interiors of the temple buildings are richly carved and decorated with inlaid woods, ivory, and lacquer. Other attractions on the property include Kandy Lake, which once housed the royal harem, and the kings' palace.

This is one of the most sacred places in the country for Sri Lankan people. Please dress respectfully, and watch closely as people crowd their way to the top to present offerings and catch a glimpse of the relic.

No visit to Sri Lanka especially Kandy, is complete without visiting the Temple of the Tooth. The temple is actually a royal palace complex, a former palace of the Kandyan kingdom, and it houses the relic tooth of Buddha. The Temple of the Tooth is also a UNESCO world heritage site. The highlight of the year when the relic tooth is removed from its shrine and paraded to the public is during Esala Perahera, a 10-day parade of dancers, drummers and elaborately decorated elephants. However, due to the past civil war in Sri Lanka (the Temple had experienced bomb attacks before), the relic tooth is not brought out but only the jeweled caskets to symbolize the tooth.

Local from Kandy

Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

Kandy was basically where I was born! :-)

The tooth relic temple is supposedly Kandy biggest matter. Here you find the history of Buddha and his life and much more. You also are able to see some monuments from the Kandyan regime.

While the cost of admission (1000 Lankan Rupees, nearly $10 USD) is, like most foreigner-price tickets in Sri Lanka, something of a ripoff, the Temple of the Tooth and the surrounding park, with its smaller temples and giant bodhi tree, makes a nice morning's exploration while in Kandy. The temple itself is fairly small, and you don't actually get to see the tooth (regarded by experts as probably not even human in any case), but the annex halls and top-floor museum (with various religious articles and offerings) provide some much-needed depth. It won't change your world to visit, but you'd be foolish to visit Kandy without taking it in.
