This beautiful temple has nothing to do with ninjas, but it got this nickname, the "Ninja temple", because there are many secret passages all around the temple buildings.
While you've got to book a tour to visit the inside of the temple, they only offer Japanese language tours. Yet we were given an English leaflet that basically covered everything they said.
The history of this temple is pretty impressive: the secret passages were built by Toshitsune, a warrior from the Kaga clan, whose mother was held hostage to Edo Castle. The temples in the area (especially Myoriju) were all places for his soldiers to standby in case of a battle.
At Myoryuji temple there's even a ritual suicide chamber that you can visit, and the whole tour was particularly interesting because the guide will show you the passageways, hidden rooms and even traps hidden here and there to block enemy soldiers!
If you are interested in visiting, you can go to the Kanazawa Tourist Information desk at Kanazawa Station. The staff there will book a tour for you and will also explain how to get there using public transport. They have maps too!

Myōryū-ji (Temple) is commonly known as Ninja-dera ("Ninja Temple"),but is not actually associated with ninjas. The temple got its nickname because of its many deceptive defenses, which include trap doors, secret entryways, and many others. It is only accessible by guided tour and costs 1000 yen ($10), considerably more than other temples. But I think it is worth it and interesting for the whole family. Tours are only in Japanese but there is an adequate written guide in English so you can follow along. Myoryu-ji is located on the other side of the river but is still walking distance.
