Lovely little area that is home to come Geisha house and is now the place to go for the original Gold Leaf Ice Cream. Sure you can buy elsewhere but why not from its origin?

This teahouse district is a nice place to walk among traditional architecture, see people walking around in beautiful kimonos, do some souvenir shopping, and eat at a nice restaurant. Slightly touristy, but still atmospheric and worth checking out.

Near the entrance to the district there is a souvenir shop that sells gold leaf ice cream cone. It's pricey about eight dollars but worth the experience!

The Higashi-Chaya district is a really unique experience. We stumbled upon it after visiting the Yasue Gold Leaf Museum. (Turn left... About two blocks, the district is on your left). Aside from being plunged into history, you also have the opportunity to browse gold shops and even eat ice cream covered in edible gold leaf.

This is the largest and most interesting of Kanazawa's three historic chaya districts. Chaya are exclusive restaurants in which guests are entertained by geisha. The district features wooden buildings and paved streets of days gone by. Open to the public are Shima Teahouse (now preserved as a museum) and Kaikaro Teahouse (still a working teahouse). Several other chaya buildings house cafes and shops. A quick visit is fun if you are intrigued by geisha culture.
