sweeping view of the entire ice field. Exhibits at the center range from animated views of the Mendenhall Glacier advancing and receding to a fabricated replica ice face. If you are more of the adventurous type, the glacier is open for skiing, ice skating and snowshoeing – just watch out for bears and maintain a safe enough distance from the edge!

Mendenhall Glacier is a big presence in Juneau. You can see the massive glacier from anywhere around Juneau. But it's even more amazing when you get near. I enjoyed the hiking up to the glacier from the west trail. But the view from the visitor center in the east trail is pretty spectacular too.

Billed as “Alaska’s Most Accessible Glacier”, Mendenhall glacier is a short ride away from downtown Juneau. At the visitor center you can catch an informative movie about glaciers and the little one can join the junior ranger program (highly recommended! They get a workbook and are awarded a patch when they complete it with a cute ceremony). You can stroll to a couple viewing points of the glacier from here.

Don't brush this off just beause it's the most popular thing to do in Juneau. Hiking trail lead to both side of the glacier and there's an information center, too.

This is an easy glacier to visit either on a tour or taking the local bus (with a little walk). The glacier is located about 12 miles from the city.

You don't need a helicopter to get to this amazing glacier. There are plenty of buses that can take you there. They have a visitor's center where you can learn about glaciers, but of course the best thing is to just go and look at it with its beautiful blue ice.

You can take a city bus out to the Mendenhall Valley stop and walk about a mile to the trail head/interpretive center. The area is well maintained, but can get crowded on nice days--particularly during cruise season. I recommend visiting early in the morning.

This is a real cool glacier that you can get right up to and see up close. Like all glaciers, though, this one is receding and you should try to get to it and see it while you still can.

This is a great spot to see a glacier. You can see it from afar, from up close, and even hike up to it. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept, and you can't beat a view with icebergs, a glacier, AND a waterfall. The hikes here are not hard at all.

A must visit when in Juneau! A one mile walk rewards you with views of a lake, waterfall, and the glacier. Don't miss taking a walk around the parking area to look at the salmon in the creek and keep an eye out for bears and porcupines.

Very cold! This was my first experience on a glacier. Alaska is beautiful! Nature and Oxigen!

The most amazing hike I ever took. If all hikes ended with a beautiful view like this, I'd be a supermodel. The glacier was beautiful, the waterfall was epic, and I felt transported into another world where beaches were made from ice cold water and waterfalls were right next to their immobilized counterpart. what a trip.

I visited the Mendenhall Glacier as part of a city van tour, so I saw it from far away while standing on the beach. Even then, the Glaciar appears huge and I could still hear parts of it breaking off and falling into the water.

I can't explain the beauty of this place in words. I was never really interested in going somewhere cold but, I am sure glad my husband talked me into going. We visited a year ago and I am still in awe.

Beautiful glacier that is easily accessible. You don't have to hike to see it, just park and walk about 10 steps and there you are!

Cool glacier and visitors' center. The unpaved paths may hold bears, evident by the salmon carcasses on the ground. Few things in life are this beautiful. Several things are more. Regardless, they all take your breath away.

If you only had a day to visit Juneau, make sure that Mendenhall Glacier tops your list. If there's time left over grab a bite and an Alaskan beer at Hangar on the Wharf. In August, you might get to watch a little black bear trying to catch a salmon or throwing a tantrum. I saw both from a bear viewing platform in Aug. 2010. Of all the hiking trails, I'm most partial to the one that ends at Nugget Falls. If you have a day to spend (about eight hours), you can hike up to the Juneau ice field.

After taking a helicopter to the top of the Mendenhall Glacier, I decided then and there I wanted to become a helicopter pilot. My horrendous vision and fact that I could barely see over the control panel hampered my dreams, but the experience remains just as amazing. There was a shade of blue -- icy, glacial, otherworldly blue -- that I'd never seen before and will never see again. If you can take a helicopter, great; if not, you can visit the Tongass Park (seven miles from the ferry terminal) viewing center and hike throughout the park (great for wildlife viewing, camping, etc).

When you emerge from the woods after a mild hike this huge sleeping giant is there for you to touch, walk on, and marvel. Mendenhall Glacier will come to life when you pitch your tent up next to it and spend the night. If you lay real still you can hear it shifting, creaking, and dripping all night long. Witness its blue glow under a clear night sky.
