Description
The Mehrangarh (literally, "Majestic") fort, rising on a towering plateau above the medieval city of Jodhpur, may just be the rare thing that lives up to its name. Monolithic and imposing, and pierced ... Read more
by seven grand gates, it's still run by the descendants of the Maharaja who built it. With large collections of arms and armor, miniature painting, and ornate palanquins (among others) it's one of the most extensive repositories of the violent and colorful feudal culture that once ruled much of North India. The included audioguide typically receives rave reviews from visitors.

In other cities in India, forts have long been abandoned. In Jaisalmer, people still live there. It makes visiting an incredible experience. There are shops, restaurants, guest houses, bars, and life goes by normally. It's a fantastic place to wander around.

Mehrangarh Fort was once the centre of Marwar, the largest princely state in Rajputana. The mighty Fort is huge, imposing and dominates the city. Mehrangarh also known as the Citadel of the Sun – today, the beautiful palaces and resplendent Rooms of the Fort have been converted into a museum that houses an impressive collection of palanquins, elephant howdahs, miniature paintings, weapons, turbans – one of the well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. Highly recommended to pay for an audio guide.

Standing on a plateau more than 100 meters above the Blue City of Jodhpur, the imposing Majestic Fort (now a museum) gives amazing views over the surrounding city and desert landscape, and is one of the best places in India to learn about and appreciate northern India's feudal history. The audio tour available for the fort is outstanding, and the preserved period rooms, galleries of arms and armor, and splendid miniature paintings lend a real sense of depth and richness to the what is already a superb architectural tour. A must-see.

One the nicest forts in Rajasthan (may be even India). They have excellent audio guides. Keep atleast 3 hours to explore the whole place. Best time would be early in the morning.
