Jodhpur Holidays

A favorite of photographers for the blue-washed houses of its old city and the colossal fort rising from a promontory in their midst, the city of Jodhpur, which gave its name to the distinctive riding breeches, remains one of the most popular destinations in Rajasthan. Once the capital of the kingdom of Marwar (literally, "region of death"), its ... Read more
Mehrangarh Fort exists today as one of the finest extant museums of medieval Rajput culture -- the view from its ramparts over the low roofs of the blue city is one of the classic postcards of India. Back down in the bustle of the city, visit Sardar Market for shopping.

One of the reasons as to why I visited Jodhpur was the Blue City, originally set up for the Brahman. The walls were painted by indigo blue not only for religious reason but also it cpuld serve as insect repellents. Unfortunately, while walking through the small alleys at blue city, I saw many trash. What a pity!

Situated literally on the edge of the Thar desert, Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan. Jodhpur is also named the Blue City as the houses in the old quarter are in varying shades of blue. There isn't a shortage of majestic forts and palaces, havelis, colours, spices and fabrics to leave you with a wow experience in the city.

The blue city! Stunning Rajasthan city. The views from the fort alone are worth going here for.

Jodhpur, with the heavy battlements of the Mehrangarh (Majestic Fort) looming from a high plateau over the blue houses of the old city, looks the perfect setting for the kingdom of medieval Hindu warlords who once made their capital here. Few places on earth can beat the Old City for atmosphere; getting lost here for a few hours is one of the surest ways to end up with some spectacular photographs. Sunbaked, dusty, and desert-ringed, Jodhpur is steeped in history. Be sure to spend a couple days here: the Majestic Fort lives up to its name, and there's always something new to discover around the next blue-washed corner.

As part of my school's India trek, we spent two days in "glamping" (glamorous camping) in the desert of Jodhpur. After settling into the campsite, we rode on camel-back through the desert to take some photos on sand dunes and watch the sun set. Later that night we sat around a bonfire, eating traditional cuisine and listing to local music. Some of us even learned the traditional dance form of ghoomar from a young local woman who danced on glass and sharp spikes!

Overall, it was a great experience and resulted in amazing photos.

The Blue City and its incredible fort make for some incredible roof-top pictures. Skip overcrowded Jaipur and start your tour of Rajasthan here instead. Ride out of town via camel on your way to Jaisalmer.
