If you grow up in Houston, you visit this place almost every year of elementary school. And it still holds up to this day! Great for families or history buffs.

I love museums but not my favorite. Just animals but nothing interesting or different to add to the community culture.

Houston has a great Museum District with attractions for everyones' interests. You can easily get to the Museum District by taking the MetroRAIL Green or Purple line westbound from our house into downtown and then taking the Red line southbound to the Museum District stop. No driving necessary to visit this unique part of town with so many wonderful museums, restaurants and even a butterfly garden!

Two things: the Butterfly Dome, and the Gemstone Vault!!! Butterfly exhibit is cheap ($8 last I checked) and worth a visit all by itself; its a beautiful huge conical greenhouse full of butterflies and tropical plants. You can walk through the museum to get to it without paying for the rest of the museum. But the Gemstone vault! Wow! Enormous GEMS the size of eggs, princess jewels, crystal formations, every kind of rock for rock lovers, and the expensive ones are kept inside an actual vault with a bank-style vault door, very mysterious and movie like to walk in there! Loved it.

Another great place to spend a afternoon. Great gem and dinosaur exhibits. IMAX theaters. 40 minute walk from Hopkins House or 9 minute car trip. Metro bus 056 travels along Montrose Blvd every 12 minutes.

The highlights are the butterfly center and the T-Rex skeleton exhibit.
A huge well organized educative l museum that you will enjoy exploring.

With the Herman Park right outside, it is an ideal family place to grab a quick lunch before going back in the museum.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is one of the nation’s most heavily-attended museums, with diverse and extraordinary offerings on four floors of exhibit halls. Included: Morian Paleontology Hall, Hall of Ancient Egypt, Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals, Wiess Energy, Space, Malacology, Wildlife, Hall of the Americas, and more. Other attractions (requiring separate admission) include Touring Exhibitions, 3-D Wortham Giant Screen Theater, Cockrell Butterfly Center, and Burke Baker Planetarium. There’s something to delight everyone!

Close to Rice University and well worth a look, especially if you have kids or teens with you. Informative displays, and it has air conditioning! Seriously, not to be underrated in summer. But it's also a good museum!

So many different exhibits - the butterfly garden and the jewels (very impressive) are always great standards, but there are great exhibits from a room simulating the age of the Mammoths to physics labs that are fun for all ages (here, here!)

The Museum is Natural Science has been one of my favorite destinations ever since I was a child. I will never forget when my mom and dad would take me to see all the dinosaur bones and butterflies. But the museum has grown since I was a child, they have added more "in house" exhibits. For example, the underwater exhibit and the exhibit showing the glory of the Queen's jewelry. Its a great place for kids and adults, while still being educational.

I went for the dinosaurs but I feel like I came away having heard mainly about oil. It's a great museum with some great displays but you can definitely tell where most of the money was invested.

The Natural Science Museum as a variety exhibits. In the past, they've had Lucy, one of the oldest human/mammals dug up, and Body Work, where the bodies were plastered. It is a fascinating place to be. They have IMAX planetarium , and also the butterfly exhibit.
