Relatively inexpensive sushi for the quality. The atmosphere was really wonderful and our server was super attentive. The honey toast was what I was looking forward to the most! We decided on the strawberry puree and it was amazing. Apparently all their versions are great though, so experiment!

Near the gigantic Ala Moana Mall, this Japanese izakaya is part of a chain, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Prices are more reasonable and lines are shorter than at many of Honolulu's more haute izakaya. The boisterous atmosphere is great for groups and the joint is usually open fairly late. A huge picture menu makes ordering easy if you're new to Japanese food.

this review is long overdue. i've been to shokudo a handful of times now and it's pretty consistent each time. the food is good, atmosphere is nice, good for groups with ample seating, location is great (next to the mall where there's plenty of parking), prices are fair, service is very good. the interior looks great. it's a good place to go to grab good food in town, esp for their $3 late night happy hours. order the honey toast! i never thought sweet toast was this good til i tried shokudo's signature dessert.

It seemed like the dessert here was more popular than the sushi. The sushi was all fine, but none of there signature rolls that we tried were very special.

I probably wouldn't buy the sushi because I think it's a little expensive, but I can't complain about the food or quality here. I love going in for the lunch menu or one of the two happy hours they have (early HH is only at the bar; late HH has more seating). If you're coming for an actual meal or around a meal time, it's best to call and make reservations. And when you finally get there, make sure not to leave without ordering honey toast as that is their most famous menu item

I need to go here again soon! I've been multiple times and it's been good for lunch , happy hour , and dinner. It's clean and beautiful on the inside.

This was location 3 of 4 on our DishCrawl Honolulu adventure and was happy this shop was included. I've been here a few times but not recently; was good to see they've added more sushi choices and a large beer selection, so will have to return again. Their sushi plate was wonderful; the Big Eye Tuna was my favorite. The sushi pizza was good, but be aware it's a bit on the spicy side with a slice of jalapeno right on top. Of course everyone raves about the honey toast with ice cream dessert and I liked it too. Although not included in our foodie crawl, I suggest you consider the banana flambe; it's fantastic. I love sake and so I'd have a grand time trying to choose one from their wide offering. The manager of the restaurant stopped by our table to welcome us and to explain the selection; I appreciate management taking an active role to meet/greet customers.

I did try some vegetarian sushi-like dish, but it did not particularly appeal to me. They did have a honey-bread dessert that was quite popular with the other people in my group. It did seem to take longer than necessary for the others in my party to be served the beverages that they ordered.

Honey toast reminds me if good old Texas toast but with ice cream and honey. Must try.

Shokudo is delicious and hip, albeit at a price.

Sashimi - Perfect texture and chilled over a bed of ice. (FYI: A reliable source later told me that they serve previously frozen sake.)
Unagi and Rice - Sizzling iron bowl with huge pieces of unagi, served with unagi broth. Yum.
Sushi Pizza - Baked, unrolled sushi topped with crab and jalapenos. Unique.
Honey Toast - Two giant slices of pan bread buttered, grilled, cut, and drenched in delicious honey, served with smooth vanilla ice cream. Sweet.

The first think you will notice about Shokudo when rolling up is the unique layout. This is far from your hole-in-the-wall kind of establishment, taking up a huge portion of the bottom floor of an office building that was formerly a bank. Bright red decorations and numerous windows draw even more attention to the place, but the real show-stopper is the cuisine. They have an absolutely huge menu of both entrees, pupus, and drinks that are guaranteed to have something for even the most finicky of eaters. Consider stopping in after a trip to the Ala Moana Mall, or nearby Walmart, and enjoy one of the best values for Japanese cuisine in the city.

I recommend Shokudo for the cheese mochi alone. The menu is a mixed bag of Japanese-fusion dishes -- even sushi pizza! -- and the lychee martinis pack a punch.

Very busy on weekend evenings.
