No reason to visit unless there is a race and you love horses. A great excuse to visit Happy Valley and have Dim Sum.

A night at Happy Valley Racecourse is a fun night out and a chance to experience a mixture of intense male Hong Kongers gambling and young expats mingling and enjoying the food, beer, and horse races.

Local from Hong Kong

Nothing beats the adrenaline-charged atmosphere of Happy Valley. The high-intensity floodlights, expectant atmosphere, booming loudspeakers, billions of dollars, streaming crowds, and streaking horses makes it one of the most exciting evenings out that this city has to offer. With its tight tracks and high stands, it’s fit for fans of all kinds, including those there for the atmosphere [or the drinks] and those there to pick a winner. Whichever strikes your fancy, Wednesday night at the races will definitely be one to remember.

With many years of fascinating past, the nearby Hong Kong Racing Museum offers an informative glimpse of the sport's exciting history. It houses eight galleries and a cinema showcasing celebrated trainers, jockeys, and horseflesh, as well as key races over the past 150 years. The Hong Kong Racing Museum at Happy Valley provides a valuable insight into how the sport has evolved locally since its early beginnings. If your weekdays are full, check out the Sha Tin Racecourse on Saturday afternoons.

A must see! Great time. They sell pitchers of beer for you to enjoy while losing money on the ponies.

You realise what a premium space is at in Hong Kong when you gaze up from the expanse of this Victorian race course, built by the British in 1845, to see the density of towering buildings surrounding it. Wednesdays are race nights and the Chinese are crazy for gambling on the gigis. Hugely atmospheric.

I was surprised with the thought of thoroughbred horse races in or near the crowded city of Hong Kong, but then my friend took me there and it was a lot of fun.

I had never seen horse racing in the evening, but they have it here. There is a huge grandstand for viewing, and a well lit track, with a huge display so you can see close ups of the action even when the horses are on the far turn.

This is sort of like combining the 19th century charm of Horse Racing, with 21st century technology. The crowds are really into to it, too, so it makes for a fun evening out filled with thrills and possibly some money!

Roughly every other Wednesday, Happy Valley is the place to be. By far the classiest race track I've ever been to and tons of fun!

Tired of all of the shopping, site seeing and eating in Hong Kong? Need a little something different to do? Happy Valley Racecourse is perfect!

On Hong Kong Island, Happy Valley is both quick and convenient to get to. Placing bets are easy (despite any language barriers) and although the audience is a little more reserved than those back in the states, it's still exciting and fun!

I am not an avid gambler, but when there is a race at Happy Valley (Which is usually wednesdays) I go.

Why? Because this is where many of the local expats unwind after a long day of work. The ground level is filled with foreign expats and younger crowds enjoying the drinking and nightlife. As you work further up into the bleachers, you will find the crowd to be more serious about winning the Quintillas. If you are in town and bored on a wednesday, come down to the racetracks and maybe you might get lucky.
