Honduras Holidays

Want to get PADI-certified in one of the best (and cheapest) spots in the world? Scuba divers, snorkelers, backpackers and, recently, luxury cruise ships have discovered Honduras' Bay Islands -- Roatan being the biggest, Utila the most chilled out -- where the relaxed atmosphere, first-class food and second-largest barrier reef system in the world ... (second only to Australia) have created a haven for those who love to explore above or below the water line. In addition, Honduras can lay claim to some of the most extensive Mayan ruins in the world at Copán, with its magnificent hieroglyphic stairway and ornate Mayan sculptures. Opportunities to explore Honduran culture and their 'punta' music are everywhere, especially during festivals such as La Ceiba’s 'Carnival of Friendship.' Honduran cuisine is simple but delicious, try a traditional 'Plato tipico' for lunch. Party animals should head to San Pedro Sula, home to the best nightlife Honduras has to offer.

Weather

The temperatures in Honduras vary more by altitude than by time of year. Elevated cities like Tegucigalpa are more temperate, while both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts can get hot. There is a rainy season, ... Read more
although it is more pronounced in the interior to the west and the south, where afternoon thunderstorms are common in the afternoons from May through November. On the northern Caribbean coast and in the Bay Islands (including Roatan, for those interested in scuba diving), the rainy season is later, from September to December, although downpours can occur at any time of year. Hurricanes rarely hit Honduras directly, but when they do, it’s a big deal. If you hear of an evacuation order, this is not a good time to revel in the uncrowded beaches -- it’s best to heed the warning and get out.

If you like going off the beaten track, remote La Mosquitia, on the east of Honduras, is for you. Made up of jungle, you'll get about by paddle boat on the river, dodging crocodiles, finding friendly villages along the way. Sleep in huts and reveal in the prospect of being miles away from a Starbucks.

Honduras is a culturally diverse county with tons of outdoorsy activities--including SCUBA diving and white water rafting--plus nice beaches and even Maya ruins. Not sure how much time you've got, but consider focusing your time in The Bay Islands, the Caribbean Coast, and for some way-off-the-beaten-track adventure, La Moskitia (aka The Mosquito Coast). FYI--San Pedro Sula has an international airport, so it's easy to access the Bay Islands and the North Coast from there (you won't have to bother schlepping from Tegucigalpa). There also are airports in La Ceiba and Roatan.
