For a look at the historic Helsinki, this is the place. An old island fortress, it is perfect for walking, taking pictures and relaxing (at least in the summer).

Nice place with its own history, the few tracks to explore, good for the small companies. Cons- the restaurants closing very early, so take a snack with you.

This island fortress is accessed by a short ferry ride from the city harbour and is a brilliant day out. The island is big enough to spend several hours on and the historical features are most interesting. There are some places to eat but I recommend taking food and enjoying a picnic if it's sunny. Check out the old church as well in the centre of the island.

The Fortress of Suomenlinna is more about the foreign powers that were battling over Finland than about Finland itself. Finland gained control of the fort around the time of their independence in the early 20th century. Highlight is probably the dry dock, which is huge, and the video at the Suomenlinna museum.

Fortress of Suomenlinna is an important part of Finnish history. A short ferry ride takes you to the island from the port in Helsinki. Take time and walk around the islands. Museum is also a great place to learn more about the place.

A wonderful place to stroll around on a sunny day. Fascinating history, a well-preserved fortress, and some local breweries to ease your thirst. A must-see, when in the Finnish capital.

Suomenlinna is an old military fortress located on an island in the archipelago off the coast of Helsinki. Lots of nice walking trails, museums, and views of the water.

Beautiful and unique UNESCO World Heritage site. Easy to reach from Helsinki centre by ferry. Has cafes, restaurants, museums - ideal for a day trip. Popular among locals too - great summer picnic place!

The fortress is very impressive with a storied history. The museums are expensive, but you can easily spend a whole day on the island. It was brisk when I did it in early March 2014 (which was unseasonably warm), but summer would be wonderful.

Suomenlinna is a treasure trove. There is enormous amount of photogenic places - old ships, forts, cannons. Dry dock area is bustling with activity twice a year when large old wooden ships are taken in and out. In the summer time there are several cafe's open, other times only couple near ferry harbour. Suomenlinna has swimming beaches, museums, brewery restaurant. In summertime the place is beautiful but can be crowded in most popular places. Even after decades of wandering - still possible to find new nooks and crannies - peaceful places.

Unlike anything I've seen before, Suomenlinna is an island with a medieval-looking wall right in the middle of Helsinki. Its only accessible by ferry, as is a beautiful ride, especially on a sunny August day like the one I went on.

The Suomenlinna Fortress was by far my favorite part of our short stay in Helsinki. Learn a little about the history of the island in the museum or just spend a few hours hiking around to take in the beautiful views. Even the ferry ride getting to the island was pretty. Also, the small stand near the ferry dock selling ice cream and souvenirs probably had the best soft serve ice cream I've ever had.

I was here at the beginning of March when the weather was freezing, but it was still a fantastic place to visit. There were very few other visitors, which was a plus, but many of the restaurants and cafes were closed for the season, which was not! It must be truly amazing when the weather is warm, though I'm sure it is much more crowded.

Really enjoyed my time here. It's definitely one of those places that has so many trails and possibilities that you can get overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time. I went alone and I think it would have been more fun to go with a friend. I would definitely come back as I didn't go to any of the museums yet, but spent my time wandering around the fortress and watching the local artisans in their workshops.

Suomenlinna is an old sea fortress and is on the UNESCO World Heritage site list. Island (consists 6) has several museums e.g. submarine etc. It is only 10 min ferry ride from downtown and ticket is same as normal bus ticket.
