This happens to be my favorite of the bay area bridges... I love how it lays flat across the surface straight as an arrow with a crest at the end that just launches you across to the east bay from the peninsula...

I have driven the length of this bridge innumerable times. So long as you avoid the rush hour going through here, it is a pleasure to roll down this road.

Pro Tip: Its free from West to East, but fast track helps speed things up from East to West.

The best time to be on this bridge is on a cold moonless winters night without a cloud in the sky. If you have a moonroof, open it up and gaze upon the sky and you will see the stars like nowhere else in the bay.

Let alone if you come down the backside of the crest in the wee hours of the morning without nary another soul on the bridge, stomp that pedal down and see how daring you are. I have topped out on this pass and found it to be exhilarating. Granted not all are as adventurous as I have been. But when you can virtually soar across on the wings of eagles, you can feel like you are flying low in lieu of driving like a bat out of hell…

The times on this bridge can sometimes be magical and memorable, so long as its not during rush hour and making you road rage…

San Francisco

An important thoroughway that connects the SF Pennisula and the East Bay, the San Mateo is one long bridge and an engineering feat with its high-low design.

If the golden gate is the prima donna, the oakland bay is the reluctant understudy, then the san mateo is the supporting ensemble. The SMH bridge does a marvelous job getting commuters across and back.

Because of its vicinity to the airport and its location right in the general descending flight path, this bridge is generally within sight and almost within reach for those looking down from the planes. I personally love it when one just happened to fly overhead, i feel this very picturesque in a modern engineering kind of way. What can i say, i like bridges and planes.

The bridge itself is long and plain, yet close and intimate with the Bay. Behind us are the flatlands of Foster City and the San Mateo Hills. In front of us is the Rohm and Haas stack and Hayward beyond. Then there's the Bay Bridge off into the distance on the left and the Dumbarton on the right. It's also fun to sometimes watch a pair of planes fly over on their parallel approach to SFO.
