Description
This small lake between the Old Quarter and the French Quarter is central to Hanoian folklore. A ghostly shrine (the Turtle Pagoda) standing on an islet at its center pays homage to a golden turtle. ... Read more
In the 15th century, this heroic reptile is said to have returned a magic sword to its home in the lake after it had been taken. These days, the sculptured park along the banks plays host to postcard sellers, hawkers, old men playing chess, freelance money changers, lone photographers looking for a lucrative snap and, at about 5am every day, locals practicing tai chi.Near the northern shore of the lake lies Jade Island on which the Ngoc Son Temple (Jade Mountain Temple) stands. The temple was erected in the 18th century. It honors the 13-century military leader Tran Hung Dao who distinguished himself in the fight against the Yuan Dynasty, Van Xuong, a scholar, and Nguyen Van Sieu, a Confucian master and famous writer in charge of repairs made to the temple in 1864. Jade Island is connected to the shore by the wooden red-painted Huc Bridge (The Huc, meaning Morning Sunlight Bridge).

Hoan Kiem Lake is very much the focal point of Hanoi. Adjacent to the Old Quarter, it's a popular spot for couples to pose for their wedding day photographs or for families to enjoy ice creams as they stroll the periphery of the lake. When I have been there on weekends, I've been approached by friendly Vietnamese students wanting to practice their English. The lake's main feature is Ngoc Son Temple, with its distinctive Chinese-style red bridge. Restaurants and hotels surround the lake.

Peaceful haven in the middle of the chaos of Hanoi. Lovely to see locals having a great time during the weekend when they shut down the street from cars

One of the best things to do when in Hanoi is to simply wander around the city, taking in the smells of hot and sour street food being made, the chatter of people enjoying a Bia Hoi (local fresh beer) on the street and the beautiful chaos of workers hawking their wares or fixing a bundle of tangles electrical cables.
The frenetic old town is amazing, but its beauty also extends to the nearby Hoan Kiem Lake, which has a different personality depending on which side of the lake you’re on. Take a stroll to the centre of the lake where there lies a temple, and is a great spot for a picnic lunch.

This is a well-known landmark in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter. Folklore says this is the site where a giant golden turtle stole a magical sword, thus ending the war. Because of this story, many people visit this lake to pay their respect. It's a nice place to wander around and people watch when you need to get away from the bustle of the city.

The lake is located in the middle of Old Quarter. It's beautiful and so lively! Everyone in Hanoi comes here, young as old to socialize, meet new people or just to enjoy the scenery!

The lake is also close by to several restaurants, bars and shops. During some evenings a Night Market can also be found a close walking distance from the lake.

This lake is essentially the "city center" of Hanoi. It is on the southern edge of the Old District and is surrounded by some of the best restaurants, bars, and night markets that Hanoi has to offer. Walking around this lake is necessary both during the day and at night.

Hoan Kiem Lake is located right by the Old Quarter in Hanoi. It's a lovely place to stroll around during the day. At night, the red colored bridge and monument comes alive with the bright lights and lovers huddled on the benches. It's lovely.

The centrepiece of Hanoi's Old Quarter, this pretty urban park makes a great place for a stroll, with some good surrounding bars and restaurants, and the ability to walk for whole minutes without the threat of being run over by a speeding scooter. The temple-pavilion in the center of the lake is hardly worth the price of admission, but it's a pretty place and a good spot for a bit of photography.

Go there around 5.00 am in the morning if you can, because this is the only time you will see the whole city doing thai chi, all kinds of other sports even aerobic classes for ladies organised around the lake... And believe me this is an amazing view to watch, if you want you can join the classes...
After they finish with sports, they visit the temple, pray... and this is how a day in Hanoi starts...
