As soon as my wife and I moved to Istanbul to teach English our new friends and coworkers began recommending Cappacodia to us. We had seen amazing pictures of the rock churches and fairy chimneys in various guidebooks so it wasn't a hard sell. I asked one of my fellow writers at Time Out Istanbul, Pat Yale, who has literally written a book on life in Turkey, where we should stay and with no hesitation she recommended Kelebek Hotel.

So with the word of an expert, we booked a room for two nights and caught the overnight bus out to Goreme. Kelebek is located on high ground overlooking downtown. It is surrounded by other cave homes and hotels in a maze of dusty back streets. It was about 9 in the morning but they let us check in. As soon as we mentioned Pat's name we were quoted a 15% discount. Kelebek arranges tours of the region (which is really the most efficient way to see everything) with a local company and we found out that the tour we wanted to go on would be leaving within the hour so they sold us tickets in minutes and after a quick breakfast we were on our way in an airconditioned mini-bus with a tour guide who spoke impeccable English.

It was after the tour that we began to appreciate the amenities of the hotel. Kelebek is more of a complex of buildings and fair chimneys linked by walkways and staircases all in all resembling a kind of Flintstone's M.C. Escher painting. Beyond harnessing the surreal beauty of the volcanic rock, Kelebek captures the best of Anatolian rustic decor. Potted plants, flowers and a stray cat or two seemed to lurk behind every corner. The main lobby is flush with books and artwork of every kind and was indeed the place to mingle with fellow guests. We enjoyed the feeling so much that we had dinner at the hotel restaurant one of our two nights.

Breakfast was always an elevated experience. The buffet meal is served on a patio with a view that takes in the town as well as miles of buttes, mountains and rock formations. I've had many a Turkish breakfast but at Kelebek the meal included every conceivable combination of honeys, jams, olives and cheeses that you could want. Warming up to the morning sunshine as we sipped our tea out of the classic tulip-shaped glasses was the perfect set up to each day.

Our room was neither small nor particularly large but despite being a manmade cave, we enjoyed every modern luxury, including a queen-sized bed, a full bathroom, wooden furniture and brass fixtures. We would stay in Goreme again and the only reason that we didn't stay at Kelebek was because they were already full. Our stay at this gorgeous yet inviting pension literally made our first trip to Cappadocia.

The hotel is in a good location. The rooms are very special, clean. Very nice also the Hamam. Breakfast good and plentiful. From the terrace you can enjoy a beautiful paradise, especially towards evening, very romantic. We also booked the hotel at the spectacle of the Whirling Dervishes, very nice charming place Caravanserai Saruhan.
