Gondar was the capital of Ethiopia in the 17th and 18th Century AD. It is famous for its Imperial Castle Compound (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the beautiful church of Debre Birhan Sillassie. Entrance to visit the castles is about 10 US Dollars for foreign.visitors.
Worth a trip if you are in Ethiopia - I would recommend a drive, at least one way to appreciate the beautiful landscape. Its near Lake Tana and Simien Mountains. City is in the highlands (2000m +) so weather is v nice and walk around the royal enclosure is v interesting.
This was once the epicentre of the Ethiopian empire. Royal castles dominate the landscape; venture into the Royal enclosure. Most impressive is Fasilidas Castle –the late King Fasil established Gondar as a powerful cultural & religious centre. Within it, lies ‘Fasilidas Bath' which is filled for the annual Timket Festival and highlight of the Ethiopian calendar.
In the north of Ethiopia, exists the previous capital complete with a castle, markets, places to hike and Jewish villages.
