Description
Saint Mungo's, or Glasgow, Cathedral, originally a Roman Catholic cathedral and the mother church of the Archdiocese and Archbishop of Glasgow, became a High Kirk of the protestant Church of Scotland ... Read more
during the Scottish Reformation of 1560, and continues to hold the Presbytery of Glasgow's services today. The setting for numerous literary works over the ages, the cathedral's ornate construction and rich history dating from the 12th century provide hours of learning and exploration. The notable crypt beneath the cathedral allegedly houses the tomb of Saint Mungo himself, alongside other famous names in Scottish history.

Magnificent cathedral, the outside is rather dark and somber, but once inside, the elaborate stained glass windows and wooden beams and inlays, and carved stone columns impress upon you its grandeur and power.

Hands down one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals I have ever had the opportunity of visiting. It opens to the public free after 1pm, and I highly recommend going in and walking around! The architecture of this 13th century building is breathtaking. I also suggest walking up to the highest point of the necropolis as well, as it has beautiful views of the cathedral.

Visit the Cathedral, Provand's Lordship (Glasgow's oldest house), St Mungo's religious museum, and the Necropolis graveyard all in the same corner of the city

Built on a steep slope this is probably one of the few cathedrals that can manage to fit an entire second church in the basement. Entrance is free (although donations are welcome) and is well worth a visit. The scale of this building alone is impressive.

Had a free tour from a volunteer, and she taught us a lot about the building. This was the best thing I saw in Glasgow. I also recommend a quick stroll in the nearby cemetery for a great view of the city and cathedral.

Built before the Scottish Reformation, Glasgow Cathedral is allegedly where Saint Mungo, patron saint of Glasgow, built his church. The cathedral was eerily beautiful upon first glance with the Necropolis in the background. Admission is free and the stained glass is quite nice. Inside, it is quiet and peaceful. It is one of the few pre-Reformation medieval structures that is still an active place of Christian worship in Scotland. These days the Church of Scotland congregate here and the building itself is owned by the Crown, while maintained by Historic Scotland.

The most complete medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland is still a working church with an active congregation. From its magnificent nave and choir to the atmospheric crypt of St. Mungo, who was supposedly buried here in AD 614. Glasgow Cathedral is full of intriguing features. Look for the tomb of Bishop Wishart, a key supporter of Robert the Bruce, and the carving of a lucky ladybird.
