On a drizzly grey day in Glasgow, stepping into the Hilton Garden Inn, was like walking into a waterside retreat. To be realistic, the water was the River Clyde but still...This place really comes into its own when darkness descends and I recommend you check-in here for the glamorous views. There's the beautifully lit bridge which takes you over the river to the TV Studios of the BBC and STV, and on our side, there's the SECC.

Having a grandfather who worked in the docks, it felt kind of nostalgic to be surrounded by this innate piece of Glasgow's shipbuilding history as one of the rigs stands protectively to the side of the hotel. Inside there's yet more reminders of this industry, look closely at the framed pictures on the walls as you walk around.

Upstairs, the bedrooms are lusciously appointed with their very own iMac computers and iPod docking stations. The beds, sumptuous.

There's complimentary wireless internet, a mini-fridge, a gym and a very functional laundry room. With three conference rooms, The Pavilion Pantry and The City Cafe, The Hilton Garden Inn exceeds all my expectations.

On the waters edge, overlooking Glasgow’s ‘squinty bridge” and neighboring the SECC, is the modern and sleek Hilton Garden Inn.

My welcome is friendly and the lobby is contemporary but comfortable. The ‘Sleep Deep’ and ‘Work Hard’ philosophies of this brand have really been taken seriously when designing the rooms. The mattress is seductively deep, and on the generous desk a shiny-new looking Apple Mac desktop presides. The bathroom, like every other room in this building, is spotlessly clean and has a little row of Nutrogena products next to the sink.

Several other superb innovations set this hotel apart. In the reception is the Pavilion Pantry—a mini, help-yourself essentials shop, selling everything from hairbrushes to microwave meals. There’s also the nifty iPoint—regularly updated with local business profiles, it’s an easy to use info point for guests to find anything and everything they’d need. Another perk for me is the laundry, where guests can wash a load for only £1.20, before drying and ironing for free!

Guests have access to a full gym across the street, as well as some work-out facilites on-site. Communal spaces consist of sleek meeting rooms, and a stylish and relaxed bistro and bar area. An outside deck offers stunning views onto the Clyde and Glasgow’s famous Finnieston Crane.

Considering the unbelievably handy proximity to the SECC and fantastic rooms, £79-219 for a night here is a reasonable deal. I’d highly recommend this hotel to anybody who loves urban spaces, especially if you’re in Glasgow for a big concert of exhibition.
