At the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, kitschy Gatlinburg is like the Disneyland of the wild. Your classic forest/mountain town, Gatlinburg is chockablock with candy shops and diners, weird museum halls and cheesy tourist attractions that make for a quintessentially American launching pad for the wild abandon of the Smokies. ... hikers should be sure to pack layers. Summers are humid and hot with afternoon temperatures in the 90s (32). These hotter months also draw the biggest crowds, though October is a close second, when everyone heads to the Smokies to see the leaves changing color. Winter tends to be fairly moderate with more extreme weather happening at higher elevations, and spring can yield unpredictable, rapidly-changing weather with sunny skies and snow flurries happening within hours of each other.

When going to Gatlinburg during the summer time, they have free trolley rides that will take you up and down the parkway which makes it so great! The hot weather can make it hard to walk to your destination and the trolley helps you discover stores from afar that you wouldn't normally notice on foot. This place is very family-friendly with so much to do!

We fully expected to find Gatlinburg tacky and not fun. It was a great surprise - really beautiful, loads of fun things to do, easy public transport, very walkable, and just overall an incredible destination to unwind and connect with fun. Will be back!
