For a special treat take the ferry from Nanaimo to Gabriola Island (really). Famous for First Nation sandstone petroglyphs, pristine beaches and natural beauty – drive round the island and explore. Lots to see and do – local craftsmen and artisans abound – and don’t worry – you won’t starve. Lots to choose from to feed the inner traveler – dining in and/or take out. My favorites for take out? Woodfire Pizza or Roberts Place (they also deliver). Upperscale spots Silva Bay Pub Restaurant or and Skol Pub are hard to beat.

Picturesque rustic island off the coast of Vancouver Island.
You can travel around the island in about 30 minutes by car, and it's entirely possible you won't see another car.
Super low key vibe.
I'd recommend taking a float plane from Vancouver instead of the ferries. Saves a lot of time for a little more cost.
Gabriola has most of what you would need in the small town center, decent sized grocery and a liquor store.
A couple of restaurants and bars populate the island.

Gorgeous gulf island only a 20-minute ferry ride from downtown Nanaimo. You'll want to bring you car so you can visit the Malaspina Galleries, beaches and local markets. This is a great day trip from Nanaimo.
