Came in here for the rooftop lounge. Not cheap, but what a stunning view. Consider it.

Wondering around the lobby I was thinking that maybe this place is a concrete metaphor of the meaning of the word: luxury. Is very hard to find something that I didn't like about this place, because I loved it all. Starting from the staff who was very kind and professional. I really appreciate the position, just next to Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria. But what really impressed me was the furnitures and the interior design. The relation between modern furnitures and the Renaissance design is well balanced and create a nice and fancy atmosphere. The room was immaculate and comfortable. Obviously the best rooms are the ones with the view over the Arno or the city center. From the internal bar, the ORVM, you can taste some good dishes and have an idea of the the florentine cousin. What is left to say is just one word: impeccable.

I have to begin with the most stunning feature of the Westin Excelsior: the rooftop bar. Sure, you've seen rooftop bars before. But this one tops them all. There is a restaurant, bar, and separate lounge, all with indoor and outdoor spaces. Definitely make a reservation at the restaurant -- they are fully booked almost every night, especially if you want to sit right on a window. Although, if you can't get that, don't let it stop you from going. Even if you don't stay in the hotel, it's worth eating there even in an interior seat. The place is made of glass and you'll still bask in the views of Florence. The room was clean and tidy. No complaints there. The shower had a couple steps leading up to it, which I found wacky and charming. Breakfast is included in a sunny room with plenty of space.
The service at the Westin is also exemplary. There is a real ease and grace in everyone who works there. The folks who work at the reception desk really understand great hospitality. They made me feel like we were really friends and I found myself hanging out to chat with them and to hear about their recommendations around town. Really stellar service in a gorgeous building and an ideal location. What a fantastic place to stay!

As soon as I walked in, I had this image of myself sitting in the lobby bar (with awesome metal carvings on the bar itself), wearing an impossibly stylish suit, drinking a martini beneath glowing amber lights, listening to Charlie Parker on the sound system…
Ahhh… It’s the kind of top-notch hotel that feels like a fantasy. The room was great, especially the triple shower head. The service was impeccable. But the best part was the rooftop terrace with a breathtaking 360-degree view. On one side there’s the old city. On the other, the new city. There’s a restaurant up there with a menu that changes every night, and it’s so good that even locals eat there (and you have to make reservations way in advance). Everything about this hotel is decadent, in a handsomely dark way. You also can’t beat the location. It’s right along the river and next to a beautiful church, in an area with lots of interesting architecture. If you can afford it, I can’t think of any reason not to stay here.

We stayed here in 2003/2004. It was beautiful and right on the river, but not as centrally located as some others. I LOVED walking around Florence, though, so it hardly mattered.
