There are several ways to visit this larger-than-life Glacier.

You can walk on the runways, which have different paths and get you quite close to it. There are very well organised and set, with plenty of maps to get around and seating areas.

Another option is to walk on the glacier itself, which is usually an excursion that already includes time to visit the runaways and then they take you on a boat to a different part of the glacier. From there, you can do the 1.5 hrs hike or, for those with more stamina, a full 3 hrs trek. However, I think the shorter one is more than enough.

Finally, if you want to get closer but don't feel like making a big physical effort on the ice trek (come on guys, it's not that difficult!), you can go on a boat ride that sails on Lago Argentino and provides a cool perspective on the Glacier. This is the ideal choice for families or seniors.

In any case, and whatever you choose, it is the must-visit while in Calafate.

You can take a boat tour around the glacier and you can see gigantic chunks fall off the the glacier! This is a must if you are in Patagonia!

A very cool sight, with quite a bit to do. The Glacier itself is a deep blue color (from what I understand, it is due to the limited amount of oxygen held in the ice), and is larger than the size of Buenos Aires. It is also one of only 2 non-receding glaciers in South America, so there is that. Two things to recommend. First, take a look at the glacier, it's amazing looking. Second, walk on the glacier (go through an organized hike, do the shorter of the two, no need to spend 3 hours on it).
