Description
The Grassmarket is an historic market square in the Old Town of Edinburgh, Scotland. In relation to the rest of the city the area is a hollow, well below surrounding ground levels. The Grassmarket is ... Read more
located directly south-east of Edinburgh Castle with the castle dominating views northwards from the space. It adjoins the Cowgate to the east, the West Bow (leading to Victoria Street) to the north-east, King's Stables Road to the north-west and the West Port to the west. Leading off the Grassmarket on its south-west corner is The Vennel, on the east side of which can still be seen some of the best remaining parts of the Flodden and Telfer city walls.

Definitely on the ‘livelier’ side of town. Cheap, grubby bars that are popular with the party animals in town

This street was once the location of an open air livestock market. Now it’s a lovely cobblestone Street lined with bars, restaurants and shops and home to some interesting landmarks to Edinburgh’s past including a marker of the gallows where 100+ men, women and children were executed for following the new religion (Protestantism).

The market was on today. There were a bunch of street performers too. Loads happening. Wish there was more markets later at night

Great architecture and lots of pubs. A view of Edinburgh Castle. A few shops and close to Victoria Street. Great to spend the day shopping nearby then come here for drinks and pub grub

A very popular area for folk who like their beer! Lots of lovely bars and restaurants. Great shops on Victoria Street. Very popular with stag and hen parties but don't let that put you off!

Grassmarket is a public square in the old town where in the cities older days they held a big public market. Today it's home to pubs and quirky shops, and offers a fantastic view of the castle.

Tucked down an innocuous side street in the Old Town this square opens up to reveal a plethora of bars and restaurants and is a great place to go in search of some nightlife.

The Grassmarket is the perfect area of town to get lost in when you first arrive in Edinburgh. The mix of pubs, antique books stores, vintage clothing shops and restaurants mean that you're sure to find something that will suit everyone's need. I particularly enjoyed wandering down West Port (where Herman Brown is located) and Candlemaker Row (for Hannah Zakari) since both streets shoot off of the Grassmarket.

Grassmarket and in particular, Victoria Street is worth a visit. Tours point out that a lot of hangings or lynchings happened in this area in the past. In any event, a good detour, just a block south of the Royal Mile near the Castle, for viewing the old buildings and colourful facades in the Old Town. There are lots of shops and pubs, and fewer tourists.

Some funky and fun shops on this road. My favorite was the Red Door Gallery which has prints and wares from local Edinburgh artists. Got some great souvenirs that people will actually love and use. Other than that, nothing really special but nice views of the castle.

Grassmarket seems to be the nightlife center of the city. There are lots of clubs and restaurants in this area.

The Grassmarket is part of every Edinburgh tour, not necessarily for what exists now (other than a solid lunch spot). Rather, it's what the site use to contain: public executions. Edinburgh, despite its harmless sounding name (at least to me) actually has a fairly grisly past. The grassmarket sits at the epicenter of this past, as it played host to these executions until fairly recently.

Probably my favourite bit of Edinburgh with the pubs, shops and cobblestone streets. Good al fresco dining in summer and traditional mulled wine in pubs in winter. What's not to like?
