retreat, refurbished in 2012.
Preserving its heritage, the hotel set the original railway clock at the site of the former station platform in Peacock Alley. Admire the Grand Staircase and the stained glass windows.

The hotel boasts two French restaurants designed by the Michelin-starred Galvin brothers: fine dining at The Pompadour by Galvin and the more informal Galvin Brasserie de Luxe. Afternoon tea is a treat at Peacock Alley and some of Scotland's finest whiskies are on offer at the Caley Bar. Taste the Rebus Rob Roy cocktail crafted with author Ian Rankin and named after his fictional character.
The senses come alive at the only Guerlain Spa in the UK. Our spa hotel boasts the best French-style beauty treatments available. The 12 metre pool, sauna, steam room and fitness centre complete the health and wellness offering.

Superb views of Edinburgh Castle are available from 68 of the hotel's luxury suites and deluxe rooms. Each room features an array of thoughtful amenities including WiFi, a flat screen TV, air conditioning, and a Nespresso coffee machine. Luxury extras such as pillow menus, bathrobes and slippers complete the experience.

Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian is within walking distance of Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, theatres and Edinburgh International Conference Centre. Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian's location can't be beat since it's set right beside Edinburgh Castle. The rooms are massive. The interior design is a bit dated, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian.

We have stayed at the Caledonia, now owned by the Hilton chain, at the castle end of Princes Street, and the Balmoral at the Waverley train station end of Princes Street.

The exterior of the Caledonian is charming because of the red sandstone and its Edwardian railway hotel origins. The lobby has a photo of Sean Connery at the hotel as he always stays there when in Edinburgh. Our room was at the very end of an extremely long hallway, but we had a great view of the castle from the three of the windows and looked into an office building from the fourth. We had no complaints, although we did blow a fuse when watching tv and using a hair dryer at the same time. Despite the historic origins, the place felt like a chain hotel.
