This is not just a luxury hotel but a beacon to navigate within Edinburgh as its location is quite central. Once the Waverly Station building the Victorian styled hotel is now home to many landmarks in the history of Edinburgh and Scotland. It was here that the famous last book of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was completed. The author has even signed a bust of Hermes noting the moment of completion.

The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh commands prime position on Princes Street.

Originally designed as a traditional railway hotel, adjacent to Waverley Station, it was known as The North British until the late 1980's. Now owned by the Rocco Forte group of hotels, The Balmoral Hotel has been transformed into a luxury 5 Star Property. It's also the place where J.K. Rowling completed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in room 552 on 11th January 2007.

The Balmoral Hotel is a very grand Victorian hotel where opulence and elegance blend in an environment where your harried, stressful life is left at the door along with your baggage.

Suddenly, the pace of life seems somewhat slower as that old-fashioned customer service kicks up a gear. You simply have to slow down and immerse yourself in your very elegant surroundings.

Upstairs, there's 168 rooms and 20 suites, there's also ten conference and banqueting suites, The Balmoral Spa, The Bollinger Bar, and the famous Palm Court where you dress up for Afternoon Tea.

The standard rooms are surprisingly spacious and some have amazing views over the city. If you really feel like spoiling yourself then choose a suite where complimentary extras make all the difference to your experience: In-Room Check-in, internet access, in-house movies, unpacking and packing service and continental Buffet Breakfast.

For serious foodies, Number One Restaurant has just received its Michelin Star for the tenth-consecutive year. If it's more of an experience you're after then book a table in Palm Court for Afternoon Tea.

The Balmoral is one of the most luxurious hotels in Edinburgh, although there was a bit of attitude when we first arrived with trouser legs covered in mud from hiking in the Highlands and my hair more than a bit wind blown. The doorman looked doubtful when he asked if we were going to be checking in. But our room was charming with a window seat looking over the Princes Street Gardens and even a window view from the toilet. I had a pedicure at the spa which would have been lovely to linger around except we had pre-dinner drinks planned.

Iconic hotel in the heart of the city with view of Princess Street and the Castle. Not really for the budget conscious, but worth staying at once just to say you've been ;)

I only went there for high tea, which was nice. The hotel is very posh, in a great location, and is perfect for a fancier tea if that's what you're going for. You could either dress smart casual or very proper, depending on your mood. You will definitely need a reservation, so try to book at least a day or two in advance, more if you're planning on going on a weekend. I went on a weekday and it was easier to get a table.
