My rating box only allows five stars, after visiting Prestonfield in Edinburgh, I think there should be a box I can tick for exemplary properties that defy description. If there were such a box, then Prestonfield would be in it.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that this 5-Star establishment is in a category all of its own.

Owned by James Thomson, he of The Witchery, the hotel was originally built in 1687 for the then Lord Provost of Edinburgh.

Now home to 23 rooms and suites, Rhubarb Restaurant and various historical public rooms and gardens, Thomson has once again worked his Witchery magic in this spellbinding fairytale of a hotel.

From a helicopter landing pad to classic cars and wedding parties, this A-Listed historic mansion has all the ingredients necessary for a quite fanciful experience.

There's opulent purple velvets, dramatic embellishments coupled with furniture and antiques sourced from all over the world. Some of the rooms have toile cloth wallpaper stretched across the walls and it's plain to see than no expense has been spared in the exquisite decor.

As expected there's 24-Hour room service from the highly-trained staff. Some of the highlights include: valet parking, complimentary mountain bikes, Chauffeur and car by arrangement and a complimentary bottle of champagne in the room. Outside, guests can indulge in a game of croquet, go for a run along the dedicated running route or practice their swing on the putting green.

Quite the Destination Hotel, if I were checking in, I would leave my Edinburgh sight-seeing for another day and another time.

Prestonfield has got my attention.
