Why Go

The small nation on South America’s west coast has cascading mountains, humid Amazon River valleys, arguably the world’s most fascinating living natural history museum by way of the Galápagos Islands, and a vibrant indigenous culture that will ignite passion in any traveler. Although Ecuador’s top attractions are not typically considered to be its cities, Quito, Guayaquil and the colonial Cuenca all have the potential to captivate visitors with their grandeur and unique twists on bright lights (Guayaquil has some of South America’s best nightlife). Further east, you’ll hit the Andes highlands, popular for hiking, and once you pass through those, you’ll be in the Amazonia. Ecuador’s Amazonian region suffers from some of the highest rates of ... deforestation and pollution among all Amazon rainforests, but it still holds fantastic biodiversity and opportunities for discovery. Of course, Ecuador’s greatest gem is found in the Galápagos Islands, located some 600 miles off the coast. It was here that Charles Darwin’s idea of evolution began to form, and the abundance of wildlife here will surely astound any visitor.

Women thought Ecuador was “generally very safe" and that "people are very friendly and keen to encourage tourism." Note that the “streets in Quito are badly lit and quiet at night but it never felt threatening.” Also, “in Quito, it’s best to listen to locals about which areas are sketchy, especially after dark.” Remember that “the city is at altitude, so you won't have the same physical stamina as at sea level.” It's a good idea to “wear a cross-body purse (if you wear purses) so you can have the comfort of seeing your bag at all times.”

The moment I gazed over the border I knew I had found a place I would love... so lush green, so warm, I've only been here a short time now but I'm not planning on leaving anytime too soon.

For Trekkers, Adventure enthusiasts, Inca/Spanish History buffs and Budget Travelers (excluding Galapagos), Ecuador is the perfect country for a vacation.

Cities in Ecuador:
Mindo and Banos - Adventure Outdoor enthusiasts
Quito and Cuenca - history and art lovers
Guayaquil and Olon - Deep Sea Divers and Sea swimmers
Zamora and Mindo - Bird and butterfly lovers
Guayaquil and Quito and Banos - Nightlife lovers
All of Ecuador - Hikers and Backpackers

The two highlights of the trip - it's super cheap (even for an Indian not earning in dollars) and the roads are lovely even for the extreme mountainous regions.

Negative: Google map is rudimentary in regions (Mindo particularly) and even wrong (several major highways around Quito that are newly getting built at the time of this review are not shown in the map). Ticket to Ecuador is expensive as it is so far from most countries. Renting car, although ideal, is expensive for Ecuador standards (when comparing prices with activities and hostel rates).

Ecuador is a small country in between Columbia and Peru. Despite its small territory,it has 3 unique climate. (Tropical, Cold and Humility) Their most famous landmark in Ecuador is no doubt the Galapagos Island, This is the island when Evolution theory really began, so many new species from there, that's no place like that. Ecuador don't get a lot of attention like other country in South America until recently. When numerous source recommend Ecuador as one of best place to retire for most American, some even put them the best place to retire period. Ecuador use U.S. Dollar currency and retentive low cost of living are the main reason.

Ecuador gets a bit overlooked - other than the Galapagos Islands - but it has loads to offer and is small enough that you can pack lots in without lots of time travelling. Otavalo is touristy but definitely worth a visit to the market on a Saturday. There are some great peaks to climb and the famous Devil's Nose train trip is amazing. The coast of Ecuador doesn't have the beaches of Brazil, but if you need a break from the mountains head down to Manta and hang out for a few days. There's also the jungle and Vilcabamba which has an amazing climate and claims to have the oldest people in the world living there.

As an eco-nut, I believe when I get to Ecuador, I will love it - especially the Galapagos Islands. Experts at Travel-Ticker.com say that Ecuador is South America’s best deal for Spring Break (before peak season begins in May). All the regions in Ecuador offer savings during the Spring, and little Ecuador has something for everyone from the Galapagos Islands to the wonders of the Amazonian rain forest and views of the majestic Andes mountain range. Although rain may linger in some areas, that helps keep tourist levels and prices low.
