The Celtic Lodge is kind of an odd one – tucked in between a pub that doubles as a popular trad music venue and one of Dublin’s trendiest restaurants, Le Bon Crubeen, (all owned by the same family) the entrance to the hotel is easy to miss and the lobby is unusually cramped and dowdy. However, the rooms themselves, while nothing spectacular, are a pretty good size for the price and location and it’s clear they’ve been renovated recently. The location is very central so there’s lots to do nearby – shopping, nightlife and tourist attractions – but this is not the poshest part of the city by any means. Being in town also means there are plenty of transport options and if you’re flying the hotel offers a free airport transfer, which could certainly come in handy.

Local from Dublin

The main selling point of the Celtic Lodge is not the hotel, but the award-winning bar and restaurant next door, which they own. The hotel is a smallish family-run business – as you’d expect, they’re friendly, trusting, and make a point of filling you with too much breakfast before you head out for the day. The rooms are clean and do the job just fine, but could get rather cramped on longer stays. The hotel is on Talbot St., which is a bit of a mixed bag of two-euro shops, ethnic food outlets and pre-Celtic Tiger Irish retailers. You have to be buzzed in to enter the lobby – unusual for Irish hotels, and somewhat unnerving, though it’s probably there just so the lone person on desk duty can take a quick break now and then. The bar next door is a proper music venue – well worth checking out in the evening for jazz and trad groups.

I don't know what you consider "affordable" but this one is less than $80/night with special winter rates. There's a lively pub right next door, so if you want to pop down for a pint and get chatty with the locals, you've got that within stumbling distance of your room. The hotel is clean, comfortable and the staff very welcoming and helpful. It's also conveniently located within Dublin.
