Why Go

Doha, Qatar’s biggest city, is a growing entity. The flow of development money has resulted in buildings like I.M. Pei’s Museum of Islamic Arts on the bay, and its selection as the site of the 2022 World Cup, the first to be hosted in the Middle East, will surely cement Doha’s growing imprint on the world map. Stroll down the Corniche, a seaside promenade affording views of the imposing skyscrapers and look for a sheesha bar, where you can join the locals in smoking some fruit flavoured tobacco. Shopping is an important pastime in this city where alcohol is largely banned (expect to imbibe only at large international hotels) and malls take on an almost theme park style - like the Villaggio, a replica of Venice where you can take a gondola ... ride from the shops to the food court. The souqs (markets) offer a less burnished browsing experience. If shopping’s not your thing, try heading out of the city for a desert safari or to see the singing sand dunes, which hum as the wind blows across them. Finally, rest your head on any of the extremely comfortable pillows at Doha’s plentiful luxury hotels.

Doha is a new and very modern city, but still feels infused with rich history. The smallest touches are easy to overlook but are amazing once you notice them - such as the multi-colored street lights that light up in different colors at night, and if you look closely are inscribed with the words of the national anthem!

A super modern Muslim city with lots of western influences in the middle of the desert. The downtown area is full of brand new skyscrapers overlooking the Persian gulf.

Nice & Peaceful place. Growing and have good potential. Biased market and not much competition but not that easy to break.

Nothing personifies the brash confidence of Gulf states like the skyline taking shape in Qatar's capital city. While nearby Dubai may be a little further along the redevelopment path, Doha is fast catching up and Qatar has established itself as the world's wealthiest country, on a per capita basis. While many Europeans and Americans are flocking here to enjoy expat lives on tax-free incomes, spare a thought for the many who work in low paid service industry jobs, often with little or no employment rights. It's not unusual for a waitress a waitress in an upmarket bar in the capital to get a daily wage equivalent to the cost of just one drink there. My summary view of Doha: an airport with a city attached.

Like Dubai, Doha has emerged rapidly out of the desert on the back of oil riches. Well-planned and somehow more authentic than Dubai, Doha still lacks the depth of attractions and history that are found in the more touristed parts of the Middle East.

Well worth 2 or 3 days (maybe longer if you explore the desert), Doha is the cultural heart of Qatar and is a pleasant urban destination that will entertain but not overwhelm.

The city is growing and changing rapidly. Guide books are out of date by the time they are published so be sure to rely on other sources. Highlights are the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif, Al Corniche, and a plethora of good dining options.

New YORK!

I might've just been suffering a little Arab-culture withdrawal in Dubai, but I really, really liked Doha. It seems a bit more sensibly developed than the Emirates, and the focus on art and culture really shows through. Plus, the corniche gives the place a logical center, after the nicely restored Souq Waqif. Plus, they have Tiffany's-blue taxis!
