Lazy beach life, Portuguese history, and plenty of great bars make hotels in Diu a popular choice for travellers looking for a different taste of India.

Like Goa, Diu was a Portuguese colony until 1961. This accounts for the different ambience of the island, where the lunchtime siesta reigns supreme and the streets are lined with pretty Portuguese buildings. The beaches aren’t quite as pristine as those of Goa, but the laid back atmosphere is on point.

Although the island is just off the coast of Gujarat, the laws and culture are completely different. Diu is part of a separate region, Daman and Diu. While alcohol is banned in Gujarat, the bars in Diu happily serve up refreshing local beers (as well as wines, spirits, and rum distilled on the island). While the cities of Gujarat are famous for their chaotic bustle, the streets of Diu are clean and peaceful.

In Diu you can enjoy busy night markets, feast on excellent sea food, or take part in water sports. Most of the action on the island can be found in Diu Town, on the east side of the island. This is where the famous Diu Fort is located. Other historic sites include the three Portuguese baroque churches, including the impressive Cathedral of Bom Jesu. As well as churches, there’s also an impressive Hindu Shrine, the Gangeshwar Temple, to visit.

Some public transport is available if you want to get out of the town and explore the rest of the island, but it’s more convenient to hire a car. The lively Nagoa Beach, isolated Jalandhar Beach, and peaceful Ghoghla Beach are all worth visiting, whether you’re interested in watersports, sunbathing, or swimming. The Naida Caves, just outside Diu Town, are a lovely place to visit. Another excellent day trip is to the impressive Fortress of Panikota. Built at the mouth of the creek, access is only possible by boat.

There are lots of great places to stay in Diu, whether you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful hotel or a swish resort. There are great bargains on accommodation in Diu, especially during low season. Room prices are most expensive during big holidays such as Diwali and Christmas.
