If you are in the mood to feel like royalty, head to the Ritz-Carlton. Every door in was opened for me and my 16 month daughter in her stroller. They did not bat an eye at my full length beard, jeans and t-shirt, and baby in tow, the front desk dashed to assistance and gave me smiles all along the way. In the lobby they even have a check-in for kids with a coloring pad and crayons. A grand staircase leads upstairs, but not before and incredible chandelier hanging from the ceiling. The King suite is phenomenal, with a cushioned headboard stretching to the ceiling and a shelving unit with wine glasses, bottles of Fiji Water, a fancy single cup coffee maker and a couple of trinkets to make it more personable feeling. Get a room on the upper levels for a great view of the city streets and slivers of the Rocky Mountains. If you have the means, definitely experience this palace. Also, it's right in the middle of downtown so there is plenty to do.

Extremely upscale, everything is perfectly in order. The customer service is beyond reproach. The hotel has a very strong business class focus and there is a corporate event being hosted here at almost any given point. The rooms are very large with beautiful views of the cityscape. As with most Denver hotels, request a western-facing room if you think you’ll spend much time in the room with the curtains drawn. Guests have access to a lap pool as well as to the full-service gym adjacent to the Ritz. If you need a driver, they have a few options available, including one with a new BMW Series. This location offers easy access to all the perks of downtown, but you will definitely want to try Elway’s restaurant on-site. Its new renovations are warm with elegant tones and gorgeous splashes of color by way of striking artwork and glass pieces, all complimented by the ambiance lighting.

It’s tough to bag on the Ritz—I mean, it’s the Ritz. The name is synonymous with luxury. And while the Denver Ritz doesn’t fall short on high-end rooms and facilities (not to mention, their first-rate staff), it failed to inspire the sense of awe I’ve experienced when I’ve visited its other properties around the world. And I think it all boils down to its location. Yes, it’s in downtown Denver, but it’s kind of on the edge of it. And yes, it’s a tall building, but it’s shadowed by taller buildings that block out the gorgeous mountain views that are so coveted in this town. The property also doesn’t have a pool (which I think should be standard once you hit 4-stars, much less 5). And it doesn’t have its own gym; it’s attached to a spectacular one, that guests can use free of charge, but it’s not its own. It kind of feels like the forgotten Ritz. Don’t get me wrong—I’d gladly stay here on business but, frankly, if I were paying out of pocket, I’d head to the Four Seasons instead.

The Ritz is, well, the Ritz, and this one delivers on its reputation. The rooms are gorgeous, with lots of space and first-class fixtures and amenities. There’s an Elway’s restaurant on the ground floor and the staff are friendly and down-to-earth. The hotel’s fitness area occupies an enclosed bridge between the hotel and the Federal building across the street. The place is enormous, with a gazillion bikes and elliptical machines, weights, a basketball court and a three-story rock-climbing wall. My one problem with the Ritz is the location: it’s kind of on the outer edge of downtown, across the street from a Greyhound bus terminal, at which point the neighborhood declines considerably. I doubt hotel guests have problems (and there is no shortage of taxis) but it’s not something you expect to even think about staying at a Ritz.
