original construction in the 1660s, when it helped Denmark fight wars against Sweden. As you walk through the fortress, you appreciate the restoration work done by the A.P. Miller company and marvel at all the bastions, all of which you can walk through; you can look in all 8 of the buildings inside. You probably see the windmill first as you approach Kastellet, but you enter through the King’s Gate (Kongeporten), which was built in 1663. Next you see the state prison and a church, Kastelkirken. Regardless of the season, you are certain to enjoy walking through Kastellet, learning about its history, and enjoying the view.

The fortress from the 17th century serves today as a military complex and a green oasis of the city, open to the public on a daily basis. It's a great place for jogging or a nice walk.

Copenhagen's star fortress was built in the early 17th century. It features two gates, a Baroque Commander's House, a prison, a windmill, and a church. Today, many of the buildings are used as military barracks. Its history is interesting, but its grounds are the real reason to visit. Cross the moat to find green lawns, a trail along the ramparts, and great views of the city and the water. It's near the Little Mermaid and, best of all, it's free.

An historic fort and museum just north of the city centre, you will likely cross this sight as you make your way to the Little Mermaid. One of the nice things to do is walk around the elevated ramparts of the Fort which gives pleasant views over the surging buildings and sights. Be sure to check out the fountain in front of the Fort.

Cool fortress overlooking the Copenhagen Harbor. You get great views of the harbor from atop the ramparts. Checkout the windmill, and explore the surrounding park, which also is home to the famous Little Mermaid Statute

Kastellet, located in Copenhagen, Denmark is one of the best preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe. It is constructed in the form of a pentagram with bastions at its corners. Kastellet was continuous with the ring of bastioned ramparts which used to encircle Copenhagen but of which only the ramparts of Christianshavn remain today.

The Kastellet is a working fort with a small garrison. There's a path around the top of the ramparts that makes for a good run.

It is one of the best preserved fortifications in North Europe. Built for military purposes this area serves mainly nowadays as a park and public area. There is a beautiful windmill in the centre, still perfectly preserved. When we visited it there was a fantastic open air party organized by the Red Cross. Amazing!
