I went there driven by the beautiful cathedral (which is impressive, by the way), but was a little bit deceived by the rest of the city.

Local from Cologne

In my opinion: No. 3 City of Germany (after Berlin and Hamburg) - with more than one Million inhabitants it's the greatest town in the west of Germany. Town was bulid by Romans as Colonia Claudia Ara Aggrippinensium (CCAA) for more than 2000 years ago. That means also that Cologne is one of the oldest Cities in Europe. The Cologne Cathedral is the most visited building in the Country. Even the town is well known for the "fifth season", called Carnival. Often the People of Cologne say: Cologne is Not only a town, it's a feeling. Last but Not least there is a local Speciality called Kölsch, a beer.

One of my favorite cities in Europe - and sorely underrated. Most people pass right through or only come here on business, but if you stop and "smell the roses," you'll find Cologne enchanting and charming.

Beautiful historical city with one of the largest cathedrals in the world. Saw some amazing chalk drawings on the sidewalks in the city and enjoyed roasted chestnuts from a cart.

Cologne has a famous and largest Cathedral in Germany. This place is popular and most tourists from Asia country must visit to see the grand Cathedral. Arts & design lovers like to see the buildings and very pretty indeed.

Absolutely beautiful. Make sure you read about the history before you get there. It would give you better appreciation.

The city that gave its name to the male species of 'perfume', Cologne has some surprisingly decent and gritty nightlife, and an interesting history as a one-time Roman outpost, but its main draw is the astonishing late Gothic Kolner Dom -- the Cologne Cathedral. Imposing, black, massive and achingly gorgeous, it's more than enough reason to visit the city.

We only had an evening in Koln, but it definitely whet our appetite for more. With history stretching to Roman times, there's lots worth exploring other than the Dom.
