I didn't stay at this Hostel so I think this review won't be helpful for you.

I did Couchsurfing while staying in Chicago and the day of my departure I had to carry my luggage all day with me until I get to the airport. So I asked the staff if I could store my backpack maybe just for a 5-6 hours. And yes they let me store my belongings here for free.

I saw a lot of international people here. I loved the lively vibe, the people and the fact they have their own cafe/restaurant with a big menu. Besides this hostel is very up to date and modern not to mention it's located in the heart of Chicago.

Next time when I visit Chicago I'll definitely stay here.

This is my first time to stay in a hostel. The staff, from the reception desk until my departure, were very friendly and helpful. My room was a private room which was large and nice. Much nicer than any budget motels I have stayed in, in the past. The hostel is huge, the whole experience kinda reminded me of my college dorm days. Many international student age young adults staying here while visiting Chicago. There are older aged travelers staying here as well.

As I said the hostel is huge. It appears well cared for and maintained. The staff was busy cleaning when I arrived around 4 pm. When I went to my room on the 6th floor a staff member was using a carpet cleaning machine going down the entire hallway. It appears that the management is dedicated to the appearance and cleanliness of the building.

The front desk is open 24 hours and there is no curfew. Quiet hours are from 11 pm to 7 am. Security is very high in the building, as you have to use a key card to get through just about every door and on the elevator. Wi-Fi is free and great for getting online for checking email and using the internet. The Wi-Fi is not so great for streaming media.

Just about everywhere you turn there is information about what daily programs the hostel is hosting as well as a treasure trove of information about Chicago and the activities you can do and participate in.

Breakfast was a bit basic but I knew that when I booked the room and actually exceeded my expectations. For the size of the hostel, which can accommodate up to 500 guests, the dining area is fairly small (about 20 tables) so communal seating the norm.

As my experience while staying here was beyond my expectations there is only negative that I should point out. The hostel is next to Chicago Transit's "L" or elevated train. This is great when you want to get around Chicago, however, there is constant train noise outside your window. It was so constant that after a few hours it was just part of the background noise and I hardly noticed it. If you are a light sleeper you probably would like staying in a hostel in the first place but you might want to keep the "L" noise in mind before you book your accommodations.

Local from Chicago

Chicago doesn’t have as many hostels as other international hubs, but hostels also aren’t as popular in the states as they are abroad. It makes sense then that this hostel is much larger than most European hostels. Seriously, this thing is big. There’s a downstairs seating area by the lobby, and a cool flag display hangs over the stairs leading to the second floor. In the guest area, there’s an information desk that comes in handy for international travelers, a computer room, a smaller reading room, a large dining area, and even a game area that has a pool table and a ping pong table. Rooms are pretty standard for hostel, so no surprises there. The only thing visitors may gripe about is the location—though it’s near downtown points of interest such as Millennium Park, there’s not a lot of nightlife in the immediate vicinity. Those looking to party should head out to Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park, River North, or the bohemian-leaning Wicker Park and Logan Square.

Walking into HI is like walking into the common area of a college dorm. On one side is a small cafe, on the other is the reception area and a large common area with several different seating areas, some couches, some high top tables and stools. It's very welcoming, despite the somewhat impatient staff. This hostel has all the amenities you could need: a kitchen, locker room, free wifi, a TV room, complimentary breakfast. It seems very clean and safe. It's also very close to a lot of the downtown colleges, so there's plenty going on when you head out into the neighborhood.

Enjoy a cheap sleep and make new friends from all over the world! It's kind of like a Do It Yourself version of MTV's "The Real World". My best Chicago story ever starts here.

This is the nicest hostel I've ever stayed at! It's huge and has a lot of amenities including TV room, pool tables, activities desk, free breakfast. Most of staff were courteous and it seemed like they were constantly cleaning. The hostel also offers free tours and discounts on attractions. Good location, right by Grant Park. The only thing that sucked was that my room was right by the train tracks.

This hostel is by far one of the best I've ever stayed in. Located in the downtown core, central to a lot of the activities in Chicago, HI Chicago is better than any motel 6 I've stayed in. Very affordable rooms, excellent security, very sociable staff, and the cleanest hostel I've stayed in within North America.

The hostel is very modern and trendy compared to many of the hostels in North America.
