Located off the northern tip of Folly, the Morris Island Lighthouse can be seen after a serene 1/4 mile walk, where you'll find one of the most secluded and beautiful sections of the beach.

At the East end of the island, take a walk to the pristine, natural end of the island, where the Morris Island Lighthouse is located. A fantastic photo shoot location, a natural island beauty! Do not swim here--heavy currents!

Morris Island Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in South Carolina, and it's only 1/4 mile from the Little Green Cottage! You can approach it from the beach or from a paved path that takes you through the beautiful wildlife sanctuary located just a few hundred yards from your driveway. Excellent photos at sunrise!

The lighthouse is a short 1/4 mile walk from the end of the road on the east end of the island. While it is no longer and active lighthouse it has a rich history. The land on which it was originally built has eroded. A local volunteer group, SaveTheLight.org, is working to save her from being swallowed by the sea.

There is nothing like a morning walk to the light house, along the beach....quiet....back to nature, peaceful and the shells are amazing!
If you are a fisherman.......the perfect place to walk to and you always catch fish!

At the far eastern end of the island, you'll find that the road (East Ashley Ave) ends and there is a rope across the road. Go around this and continue on foot (or bike). Eventually this will end and you'll continue on a sandy path. All in all, about a 20 minute walk. Go at Low Tide and the sandy path will open up to an expansive view of the beach, inlet and Morris Island Lighthouse. You can walk around this end of the island at low tide and enjoy the view. You can also take a boat to Morris Island, but not necessary as you cannot go inside.

Walk to the edge of Folly and be mesmerized by the power of the ocean which has left the lighthouse standing in the water and no longer on dry land.

The Morris Island Lighthouse is located at the far northeast end of Folly Beach. Just drive on E. Ashley until the road ends, then park in the circle and hike out to the beach to see the lighthouse. It is just a short walk on pavement and sand. The lighthouse is surrounded by water most of the time now and you are not allowed to go over to it. But it makes a beautiful backdrop for some beachy photos!

Local from Charleston

The Morris Island Lighthouse, originally built in 1767 can be seen at a distance from our dock but is best seen from the NE end of Folly Beach. From our home, take a left onto East Ashley Avenue and continue until the street ends. There is a parking lot at the end of East Ashley Avenue. From the parking lot, walk about a 1/4 mile to the beach. Morris Island Lighthouse stands alone approximately 400 yards off shore.

The first Charleston lighthouse, 300 yards from shore continued to provide service until the Civil War. In 1861, the fleeing Confederate soldiers blew up the lighthouse so northern troops could not use it. Following the Civil War in 1873, Congress appropriated money for the rebuilding of the Morris Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse was completed in 1876 approximately 400 yards from the earlier tower.
