Catalina Island

Summer brings crowds to Los Angeles, booking up hotels along the coast and restaurants in the city. From September to May the area is less crowded, and the air less smoggy, though you may encounter the hot, dry ... Read more
Santa Ana winds. Headed to the beach? Don't go in June when the 'June Gloom' makes the beaches cold and foggy for most of the morning. The coast is always a bit cooler than inland (head to Santa Monica and not Hollywood if you want a breeze). Whatever time of year you go, however, you can leave your down coat at home.

It's a nice weekend getaway for family and young couples . Some of the activities are very pricey. Food places are not bad but some of the sales clerks are rude .

I absolutely loved Catalina Island - the main town, Avalon, is very European-esque, with a small town feel. You can spend your day wandering the streets, licking an ice cream cone and popping into ships, or lounging on the beach, or partaking in a variety of activities like parasailing, snorkeling or diving, jetskiing, or even riding a submarine to see underwater life. It's a great place to get away and slow down, and the sunsets over the vineyard-covered hills, coupled with the azure waters, reminded me strongly of Italy.

If you would like to take a boat trip to an island Catalina is the place to go. This island has not changed much in over 50 years and is primarily a small seaport town. They have buffalo on the island which you can see on one of the tours. You can take the boat from Dana Point which is a 35 minute drive north from Oceanside.

What a beautiful island with great scenic hikes and beautiful views of the ocean!

Easy going island getaway, small and walkable, not great for shopping or kids, good for getting away (and close to mainland). No true Catalina culture observed but very quaint.

Gotta have a golf cart for your stay on island. Treat yourself with a villa at Hamilton cove!

By taking just a one hour boat ride, you can treat yourself to a mini vacation on this lovely little island just off the coast of California. The town of Avalon has lots of cute little shops and restaurants, and there are all kinds of tours and excursions you can take on the island.
